Subject: ShadowRN T-Shirt Update

Hi all,

I'm trying to get an accurate estimate on the cost for the shirts, hopefully
I'll have one this time tomorrow.

A few questions have come up here. I'm going to try to answer all of them
everyone has sent me.

1: What's on the back? Everyone's names and hopefully their e-mail
addresses. I'd like to use everyone's real name or the way everyone
regularly signs their posts to ShadowRN.

For instance, my line will read:
Thomas Deeny <fauxpas@******.net>
(One of the) David's will read:
David van Nederveen Meerkerk <D.N.M.vanNederveen@***.ruu.nl>

I'm also thinking of putting a quote on the top of the back. "Know when to
run, know when to hide." -Inner Sprawl Graffiti

Under that will be all of our names, and under that will be (in a larger
point size):
shadowrn@********.itribe.net

2: What's on the front? The Shadowrun dragon's skull/banner logo (that is
a dragon's skull, right?) based on the cover of the SR2 rulebook. There'll
be one or two figures under the logo. It's raining.

3: How do we pay for this? I think I'll have to pay half down on the
shirts when I place the order, with the other half when I pick up the
shirts. I'll have more info on that in a day or so when I get the estimated
prices. I'd prefer a check or money order made out to "Thomas Deeny". Some
of the money is going to C.C.Creations (screenprinting shop), some goes to
the postage.

4: Hey, is this a scam or something? No. Initially I thought the checks
could be written to the silkscreening company but then realized that I'm
charging extra to cover shipping costs. There should be no profit made on
these shirts.

5: Kenneth Webb sent me this: "Also, I should mention something that came
up last year that Gurth forgot to mention. When <they> were seeking
approval for last year's T-shirt, they talked to Mike Mulhivil (sp?) and
asked if it was okay to do this. I
believe he said that it was basically okay if <they> met some stipulations.
I don't remember them all, but a few were:"

a. putting on the shirt "Shadowrun and the Shadowrun Logo are copyright
1996 by the FASA Corporation."

b. no profit for anyone.

c. Mike Mulhivil gets one.

Anything else I need to know, Gurth?

6: What color are the shirts, anyway? Out of the 42 people who have
expressed interest, we've got 16 who favor black, 1 navy, 1 blue (I'm
thinking this was another vote for navy), 1 grey, 1 dark green, 1 "I don't
care, I just want clothing", and 6 whites. Half of those whites were "white
or black" and I added them into the black category as well. 19 respondants
didn't list a shirt color preference.

It looks like the majority want a dark colored shirt. The design I'm
working on will work best on a navy or black, probably better on black.
(Nurse Wratchet: There's a gunmetal shirt that's a dark grey I think we can
use if you prefer. I'll have to check it's availability when we place the
order.)

Any more questions? E-mail me at fauxpas@******.net with "T-shirt
Question" as the subject line. Thanks!

You're not using my real name!! :)

Also put NERPS, ShadowTK, and PLOT-D's addresses on.

No prob. I thought you'd rather have "Gurth" on the shirt than your real
name. Everyone here knows you as "Gurth". Same with "Bob" and
"U-Gene", to
name a few others.

What're their addresses? I'm not subscribed to either of them.

Same as ShadowRN, except replace "ShadowRN" by the list name. So, for
example, TK is ShadowTK@********.itribe.net

Last year I was Quindrael XLII and this year I'd like it to be that way
again :-) It _is_ my SR name after all, though I don't use it here
everytime (BTW, it's my general international rpg name, I use it in

For all those who have been waiting on a ShadowRN t-shirt, good
news! They have been shipped! Got mine today. Looks pretty good. I
expected more, but I'm glad to have it nonetheless after all the
delays.

Just FYI.

You know, when I read this I thought that if you have it, it'll take a
long time for mine to arrive. Then about half an hour later, it drops
into the mailbox... Too bad there are no names on the back this time,
though :(

So, are we going to do another shirt this year?

I would like one to be done for ShadowRN (Undernet #Shadowrun ops and
regulars are still thinking about doing one for the channel..), however,
who wants to DO it? I don't really have the time to do one myself.. do we
have a volunteer? :)

A reliable volunteer? ;)

What would it entail? As Gurth can tell you, I'm one of the few people to
have followed up with their submission for the NERPS: Guide to the Whole
Fraggin' World. So I'm at least a little reliable...but I would want to
know what the job is before taking it (good shadowrunning etiquette don't

Lady Jestyr and myself have been discussing volunteering to do the
list t-shirts this year, maybe I can coast in on her reliability
:) Pending her final word you could probably count us as eager
if not reliable volunteers as it were... ;)

Depends... what would the shirt actually, y'know, _look_ like? How many
people are interested? And so on. I cannot draw, but I can shuffle papers
and order t-shirts with the best of 'em. :-)

I've done net t-shirt biz before, but I was just the `organizer.' Someone
else did the artwork, people sent in their money, I just had the shirts
printed and mailed 'em out.

Yes :( Still, I can point out that the first two shirts went quite well;
shirts #3 and #4 have better artwork on the front than Rob Hayden and I
managed, but I never was too happy with the way the rest was handled.

I for one would like to do another shirt this year (after all, the one I'm
wearing now is actually 1997's shirt), and I'd be willing to do the layout
and all that, except we'd need someone else to draw the picture for the
front (I'm no artist) and actually print them up (I have my reasons for
not wanting to receive money from all over the world).

I'd say you have to have be trustworthy enough to take our money and not
run away with it to spend it on "hookerz and booze" (Rob's idea for what
to do with our money for the 1995 shirt, IIRC :), and be able to get the
shirts printed in time and against a reasonable price (i.e. not US$30
each).

Speaking from past experience, only about half of all the people who say
they're interested actually buy one when it gets time to send in their
orders.

Like I said, I'd be willing to do layout and stuff, and if an SR logo on
the front (without fancy artwork) is acceptable then I can do the whole
design. If artwork like that on the 1996 and 1997/8 shirt is desired,
somebody else will have to draw that, though I could still do the layout.
My main gripe with the 1996 shirt was how poor the back had been done.

For those who haven't been on the list for that long, the idea is to have
a list with the names of all the people who bought a shirt on the back.
The '94, '95, and '96 shirts all had this, the most recent one doesn't :(
The main drawback is that ou have to order and pay for the shirt _before_
it's actually printed, as the list of names must be established before
going to the printer.

Yep. I know of a really good local T-shirt shop in my area. But
printing and mailing wouldn't be much below US$30.

Find out what it would cost to print and mail the T-shirts. Go to
a local shop (or friend if you can) and get their bulk rates and find
out if they can work from an electronic image. Any post office can
give you a rough idea of mailing rates. Remember, a lot of the
shirts will be going overseas.

Let the list members know how much it's going to cost and see what
kind of feedback you get.

If the feedback is positive, get some artwork. Post the artwork on a
webpage and ask for feedback. Pick the piece that wins.

Give the list a deadline for sending money to you. After that
deadline has passed go to the shop and print the T-shirts. Then mail
them.

Ta da! You're done :)

From past experience the "feedback" phases take awhile. And then
there are always people (who me? ;) who mail in the money late and
still want a T-shirt.

It's not a job, it's an adventure! :):)

Judging by past years, get the price for about 25 to 50 shirts.

> and find out if they can work from an electronic image.

That'd be preferable, though not 100% necessary. I snail-mailed hardcopies
of the designs for the 1995 shirt to Rob Hayden, for example.

To give an idea, there was US$4.68 postage on the envelope I received my
shirt in.

That's about it, yeah.

I'm getting better... I haven't had time to fix it the `right' way (by
writing a procmail frontend for sendmail), and AFAIK pine can't rewrite
headers on the fly.

Heh. Shouldn't be a problem; pick up the shirts and a bunch of (Global)
Priority Mail packets from the post office, fill out all the forms, take
'em in the next day and write out a reaaallly big cheque. :)

About $11 per shirt US. Varies a bit depending on size of artwork; that
was for black shirts, a smallish logo on the front about where the pocket
would go, and most of the back with biggish artwork. All one-colour,
sadly; full-color is mondo pricey.

D'oh! Forgot to ask about that. But if good artwork can be snailed, that's
definitively not a problem.

In the US, three bucks. T-shirts will fit in Priority Mail envelopes. A
little bit more for overseas (from me :) but they have this new `global
priority mail' gimmick. If it weren't raining so bloody hard outside, I'd
go to the post office, fold up a T-shirt, and get some ballpark figures.

I'll just use five bucks as a planning figure. In the unlikely event
there's money left over, just give the extra fifty cents to some good
charity.

Could you get a price quote for for a large front print (about A4/Letter
size) and a large back print (ditto), one of them in two colors? That's
the way the '94 and '95 shirts were set up. The '96 shirt was similar but
had a four-color front print.

Nope, sorry, I use Pegasus for Windows.

Just a thought, but we could probably use the Kagi system to handle the
money. Kagi started as a system allowing shareware authors to collect fees
in an easy manner. Basically, Kagi processes all the fees (via. mail, FAX,
e-mail, etc.) and handles checks, credit cards and whatever from all over
the world. It then sends a monthly lump payment to the author, along with
information about each order (who made the order, their address, and so
on). They have payment software that will run on about any platform
(including Newtons). Kagi's "cut" depends a number of factors (type of
payment, currency conversion, et. al.) and is explained at
http://www.kagi.com/FAQs/KagisTake.html. This might to much of a cost, but
it looks like we're talking from 7 to 15%, depending on who does the
ordering.

Naturally, this doesn't solve the problem of trust, but it would mitigate
the nastiness of how ordering is done. I've only ever used Kagi as a
consumer, and think it is very well implemented and easy to use.

Just and idea.

Well, I don't really think the trust issue is that important here. It
would be best if a well-known member of the list were to handle the
printing & shipping, because "we" know who he or she is (apologies to all
the trustworthy but unknown listmembers :)
