Ack,

I was just on the Fasa homepage and there's a disconinued Shadowrun 3rd
Edition Hardcover! Ack, when was it on sale? Anyone know any specialty
shops that might have one? I'm always lugging my softcover back and forth
and it goes through lot's of wear and tear. Why does FASA always
discontinue the hardcovers? I think people would keep on buying them? Oh
well.

*grumble*

This does not mean an ordinary hardcover; the entry refers to the
limited-to-1000 hardcover edition of SR3 only sold at GenCon 98 (the
remaining 71 books were sold on FASAīs website). It is wrapped in some
fake-leather material and is stamped with a metallic-blue Shadowrun S. It
has been referred to by this list as "BABY" (big all black yearbook).
It IS possible to get one, I guess, but it would require (a) lots of lock
to track someone down who is willing to sell it and (b) lots of money.
There have been many people complaining about this exclusive offer at
GenCon because it was nearly impossible to get one from other sources
besides the slim chance to get it from the website.

Bye,

I dunno... I picked up five for $US125 and didn't go to GenCon and didn't
order online.

There were only 1000 of these. The bulk of them were sold over the
space of three days at last year's GenCon. 72 copies were also sold
between 10 AM and Noon, Central Daylight Time, August 17th, 1998, in
a buying frenzy that severely clogged FASA's online cart-server.

:Anyone know any specialty shops that might have one?

Not likely. The pre-GenCon98 rumor was that if an individual retailer
were to order a case of 24 first-printing third edition softcovers,
FASA would send them out one and only one copy of the Hardcover. I
don't recall hearing if this actually happened or didn't happen.

If there _were_ any of the thousand hardcovers distributed this way,
the odds of finding it on a retail shelf are practically
non-existent. Any retailer who has sufficient demand for Shadowrun
product in her market to justify ordering 24 softcovers would de
facto, have enough demand to guarantee that you would not find the
hardcover still available one year later.

Your best bet would be to try E-Bay. A handful of hardback owners
have occasionally auctioned them off in the past year. Expect to
spend _at_least_ $100 US.

:Why does FASA always discontinue the hardcovers?

In this particular case, the hardcover was intended to be solely a
promotional item, something to increase their impact on the largest
industry convention of the year. It was never intended for
mass-consumption by the public.

In general, it would seem that FASA does not think that demand for
core rulebooks in hardcover is large enough to justify the higher
per-unit manufacturing costs of a hardcover.

*Sniff*
I'd buy a reasonably priced hardcover of the core book. I mean I always
have to lug my softcover to school, my friend's houses, etc and it gets
destroyed in the process! No matter how careful I am with bookcovers and
telling all my friends not to bend the spine too much, it eventually falls
prey to wear and tear. I think most role-players bring their core books
to places with them and then there's a crowd who only buys the book for
pleasure reading.

If any FASA folks are reading, I think there most definitely is a market
for the hardcovers.

Those were my two bits,

I wonder if there's truth in that.

The only other game I know of that has had both hard and soft cover versions
of the same rulebook selling at the same time is GURPS. And I don't know how
well their hardcovers have sold. I do know that I own them.

I also know I would buy a SR3 hardcover over a softcover for as much as a $5
difference most likely. Beyond that I'd only do it if it was a collectors item.
WHile I could afford $100 for one easily; I could not justify to my spouse...

If the SR3 rules were easily available in hardcover in most gaming stores and
so on; what percentage of people would opt for them? If the rules were only
available in hardcover format and it shot the book's price up another $5 US
how much would hurt SR3's sales?
Retorical questions one can ponder.

However I will say I'm not so sure I'd want a hardcover using the first printing
of the rules before all the erratta fixes. In fact I already plan to sell my
softcover as soon as I can locate a 6th printing (probably next year as I don't
think it's even been printed yet) to replace it with.

I'm sitting not three feet away from a 6th printing of the SR3 softcover.

For whatever that's worth, anyway....

Really?

So then they're out there.

I want a 6th since that seems to have some stability in terms of the
errata.

That's about $65 US. Seeing as how the book typically sells for $100
US, it's actually quite the bargain, even with international shipping
and currency conversion costs.
