In our last episode a number of people weighed in:

#.> >> The best animated thing in a long time came out of Japan.
#.> >>
#.> >> Ghost in the Shell :)
#.> >
#.> >I disagree, I though Ghost in the Shell was way too over-rated.
#.> >
#.> > etc.

True story:
So there we were last night at the video store, about $25 in hand,
looking at the vast collection of Japanamation, with absolutely NO idea
which one(s) to buy. Grrr.

There weren't nearly as many titles the last time I ventured in there.
Unfortunately the local video rental store only stocks the likes of
"Street Fighter II" -type anime's, so I can't try-before-I-buy.

Any suggestions?

Specifics:
I've noticed that some of the better-looking ones seem to come in
many(!) -part series (like "Neon Genesis"), but at $20-30 per video,
that's more like an investment portfolio, than an evening's
entertainment.

I own "Ghost in the Shell" which we really, really like. I also have
the US movie version of "Armitage the Third" (the Kiefer Sutherland &
Elizabeth Berkley edition)-- another goodie!

<Initiating on-topic re-alignment (since DV's a-gunnin')>
Are there any other SHADOWRUN-ish anime's out there?

I'm looking for something with good artwork, storyline, characters, &
realism (or at least _one_ of the above). Preferably English versions.
Something I can throw at my players would be nice, too. Giant robots
are okay. (Geeze, this sounds like a personal ad!)

I have a number of anime books, including "Midnight Eye:Gokü, Private
Investigator," which has a real SHADOWRUN-y feel to it, plus all of the
(US) originals of "Crying Freeman." But I'm dubious as to how well
these'd translate onto video. I'm wide open to suggestions, here!

Heck, I'll settle for *any* good non-A-Ko-ish (is that a word?) 'toon!

There was one I liked called Aira, it might be 2 parts though. It wasn't
as close to SR as GitS, but it inspired me for a few ideas. My favorite
anime though is Ninja Scroll...definately the best...completely not SR
though...still really good though.

Well, Ranma 1/2 is usually fun:), though the manga might be a better investment.

Evangelion's a good series (my roommate has just purchased the entire series
subbed -- still waiting on the second to last tape), but not terribly
shadowrunny in a lot of respects (although I suppose that there could be some
easy inspiration without too much trouble... hmmm...)

Well, Bubblegum Crisis might be worth looking into if you haven't already. The
art in the first episode blows (IMO), but gets better as the series goes along.
It should provide plenty of inspiration if nothing else (a tad much for most SR
games in a lot of ways, though). Demon City Shinjuku was pretty decent (IMHO,
again) and occasionally gets shown on the Sci-Fi channel. Gunsmith Cats would
also be worth looking into, as would Lupin III (if you can find it, I'm not sure
how rare that one is). I've heard Appleseed suggested as a cyberpunk anime (I'm
also told that the manga is much better than the anime). Patlabor or New
Dominion Tank Police might also be useful for SR (both are a tad much, but
elements of both would work well in an SR game). Of the two, I liked Patlabor
(the movie, I've not seen the series) better, but I think Tank Police might have
more Shadowrun-esque bits. Tank Police occassionally shows up on the Sci-Fi
Channel. Golgo 13 might be worth looking into, as well (haven't seen it). Dirty
Pair, maybe (haven't seen that one, either). Battle Angel Alita was *real* good,
but the anime doesn't do justice to the manga's storyline. Both manga and anime
are quite good, though. Setting won't translate over to SR very well, though.
Iria was another good anime (IMO) which could maybe be used to inspire some
stuff for SR, but the setting and most of the stuff in the flick won't translate
over at all well.

Then you should maybe skip Ranma:), which is almost (but not quite) as messed-up
in the head as A-Ko:)

> --Fenris, who actually owns 2 A-Ko flicks.

Oh, I'm sorry:):)
I guess A-ko just kinda weirded me out (the aliens and the battlesuit and God
only knows what else). It was a little much for me:)

Riding Bean is the closest you'll come to the Shadowrun genre.
Doublecrossing, guns, tough heroes, fast cars, and all set in Chicago. I
can't recommend it enough. Silent Moebius is next for runner up but it's
a more obvious connection in the Manga than in Anime. That's all I can
think of that directly ties into Shadowrun everything else needs a lot
more adaption.

"Aira?" - about a girl who's just become old enough to become a licensed
bounty(monster) hunter, like her older brother? Yea, that's a good one.

I've been trying to remember that anime's title for months!

Iria, the Zeiram animation is the proper title. there is three tapes
(6 episodes) in the series. It's been a great source for my Quarantine
project. I've been watching more anime lately to get myself psyched to
write more on it.

Closer to SR would be the AD Police files. It has a much less sci-fi feel to it
since the main characters are stuck using primarily less fantastic equipment. There
is however a BubbleGum Crisis RPG by R. Talsorian Games that your local hobby shop
can probably order if they don't have it in stock. I have three of the books (I
haven't seen any more) and have read through them, but haven't had the oportunity to
run or play test them at all. Still though, if you are looking at including aspects
of that world into your SR group they have plenty of good info. Funny how this RPG
is brought up every so often on the list. :)

For those of you who are interested, the ISBN's are:
Bubblegum Crisis: The Role Playing Game 0-937279-80-3
Bubblegum Crisis: Before & After 0-937279-92-7
Bubblegum Crisis EX 0-937279-97-8

Although it is a six volume set the Angel Cop storyline may provide some good
inspiration as well. It involves a lot of psionic characters but with a little work
they could be converted into mages...

Try the Patlabor movies... The second one specially fits SR. They
feature not-so-giant
robots and are set in the year 1998... (!) : ) .

Golgo 13 was awful. The guy was like James Bond^3. It

I would also suggest "Riding Bean" (assuming that someone hasn't suggested it
already). Bean Bandit is a good Rigger template (even though he has no
cyberware, nor does anyone else in the show).
Not to mention the fact that he pretty much lives outside of society (like
most 'Runners) and gets himself into one Hell of a frame-up.

Golgo 13 isn't too bad. Now that you mention it, it would be an
interesting run.

A Bladerunner-type world done manga-style - the cops are ex-criminals
who are forced by a wedlock-style collar to obey (and enforce) the
law... etc etc. Monofilament whips, vampires, and orbital platforms...

IIRC that's the one where a few criminals with 1000 year sentences get hired
to work for the police in dealing with suicidal cases.

Ever time the succeed, a few more years get knocked off their sentences.

Oh, and of course, they all have their own speciallist abilities, like one's
a super-hacker, one's cybered up, etc....
