A lot. A heck of a lot. Not least is the fact that it is based upon
the cyberpunk genre. A lot of people make the simple mistake of
thinking that Cyberpunk 2020 is /the/ Cyberpunk, it isn't, it is a part
of the genre that is Cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk the word is taken from the terms Cybernetics and the 70's
generation of streetwise anarchists known as Punks.

If you want a more informative dissertation then look at.

There's a lot more said there that I don't see any point in repeating on
this list.

Shadowrun is cyberpunk by it's nature and involvement in the genre that
adheres to a particular view of the future. It is not Cyberpunk 2020,
which is a game produced by R Talsorian Games.

We /are/ playing Cyberpunk, even though it is called Shadowrun.
Shadowrun is the name of the game. Cyberpunk is the name of the whole
genre.

Hope that helps.

Except SR is also a cross-over between two genres, cyberpunk and fantasy.
The world in general is very cyberpunk -- big corps, social decay,
individual people who can make a difference (probably without knowing it
or even against their own will), etc. But the presence of magic adds in a
fantasy element; luckily, though, it's not high fantasy where the PCs are
the good guys and they fight against the bad guys and good always wins in
the end.

It isn't that yet...
