instrumental part)

Hoi everybody,

I just found the perfect bit of music to add that particular "ambience" to
any Shadowrun gaming session. ;)

The song is "Hurry Down Doomsday (The Bugs Are Taking Over)" by Elvis
Costello. It even has a nice dark feel to it.

I can just see myself at some gaming session. The players walk in and this
song is endlessy repeating softly in the background. Sitting on top of my
pile of sourcebooks and other GMing stuff is the Bug City sourcebook.

Players: Look at book, look at odd grin on my face and gleam in my eye
"Hey Adam, what are you going to do to us?" "I really hope you're not
intending on sending us to Chicago." The words to the music finally hit
them. "OH NO, HE'S SERIOUS!!! RUNRUNRUNRUNRUN!" Players scramble for the exits.

Me: "MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA". Wait till they've left. "My, that was
fun". Calling after players running across corn field. "Good game guys.
Do it again next week?"
Later,

Well, since this seems to be Nostalgia Month (SR movie, mages vs. shamans,
etc), I figure I'd revive one of my favorite old threads: what kind of
music do you all out there like to play during your game sessions to
foster that SR atmosphere?
IMHO, atmosphere music is best played fairly softly, both so that
the players aren't distracted by the lyrics (if any) and so that speech
can be easily heard (Most of my friends have stereos that are best
described as RMBFB (Really Mind-Blowingly Fucking Big), so the whole
speech-volume thing becomes important). Withthat in mind, here are some
of my old favs:

Virtually anything by Nine Inch Nails, especially Fixed, Rusty
Nails, or any number of "Extended" mix CDs.

Certain songs by Sister Machine Gun (Sins of the Flesh, Burn,
etc.)

The Crow _Score_, (not the soundtrack, although it is OK).

Various songs by Joy Division (Transmission, She's Lost Control,
Shadow Play, Day of the Lords)

Killing Joke. (I only own the Pandemonium album, so I don't know
about the rest of their stuff).

Gravity Kills (Especially the Guilty remix album with some of the
very extended, creepy remixes of Guilty, absolutely wonderful for subtly
freaking out the players).

The Hackers Soundtrack (Esp. tracks 2 and 3).

The Bladerunner soundtrack, not to be too cliche, :).

Variuos songs by KMFDM (light, etc.)

Well, that ought to be enough to start the thread up again. On
with Nostalgia Month! (I think next I'll post something about APDS,
followed by a post on character generation, with a post or two about
Dunkelzahn's Death, :P ).

Another one for SR muzak:

- Napalm Death, the "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" album. Great stuff.
- Wagner, all works (suitable for showdowns)
- Nail Bomb, "24 hours bullshit" song (or the whole album)

Mortal Kombat Soundtrak (From the game, not the film.)
The Gear Daddies - Bubba's Favorites!
Abba (For those retro clubs)
Kraftwerk - good techie tunes
David Zaffiro - "In Scarlet Storm"
Billy Squier - "Lonely is the Night", "The Stroke", many more!
Clannad - "Soundtrak to Robin Hood (The British TV version, not the
crappy movie.)
Ruby - Not music, more of a live play, but has great sounds!
The Art of Noise - mostly for the Noise
Mike Nesmith of the Monkees and Frank Zappa "playing" a car with
sledgehammers! (Not kidding! They did it on an old Monkees episode!!!)
Petra - "Computer Brains"
Dramarama - "Work for Food", "Don't feel like doin' Drugs", "Hey
Grandpa"
Agent Orange - Living in Darkness, This is the Voice, Real Live Sound
(Great band. Can't reccomend them enough!)
Altar Boys - "Gut Level Music", "Kids are on the Run"
Andreas Vollenwieder - "Dancing with the Lion" -
techno-shaman-electroharp music!

Other than that, anything that's handy! :-)

Weird Thought:
Has anyone tried "Bolero" (from Maurice Ravel) for a Shadowrun Combat Music?
In a game of mine, it was great! Gave a lot of that "slow motion" feeling you
should get when rolling dice for half an hour for simulating a 12-second
combat... also reminded me of these super-slomo-scenes from "The Matrix"...

I don't know if it's the name of the band or the actual song, but the
Rage Against the Machines track seemed particularly safe ...

That reminds me, the Shadowrun Music page was on Lady J's, right?

What the hell? Every since I came back from Portugal my English has

What I meant was that it seemed particularly appropriate :)

We generally don't listen to music while we play; I don't think well when
music's playing about anything other than the music itself. But sometimes we
do.

Try Einsturzende Neubauten's "Tabula Rasa," or "Halber Mensch." Or
Laibach's
"Opus Dei." Or Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2." Or
Ministry's
"Psalm 69," if you just want to break things. The best is probably the
soundtrack for the film "Heat." Also good, the score for "The Crow."
Depending on the mood for the night in question, "Radio Inferno" or
"Deutsch
Kreiger" or "Apocalypse Live" by F. M. Einheit et. al., or "Martin
Atkins
and the Chicago Industrial League Present an Industrial Christmas Carol," or
Kronos Quartet. Or Wagner. Or Stravinsky.

Come to think of it, I'd rather listen to just about anything other than
Rage Against The Machine. But I prefer music that takes talent to make.
[With the exception of Ministry. Al's a hack.]

It's from Godzilla, I believe. The funny thing is, I don't really like most
of the bands that have a similar style to Rage, and I don't even like a lot
of their songs, but I find myself liking certain songs of theirs a lot,
especially the ones they do for soundtracks.

Hey, IMO RAtM has some of the greatest lyrics of any music to date.
Not so much in *what* he's saying, but more in how he says it. The
man's got talent, now the music and the message may not be in your
taste, but I think his passion and his skill in phrasing are
unsurpassed (especially in popular music).

His skill in phrasing?!! La Rocha's got some of the worst lyrics ever to be
in a song (next to that damned stupid "New Kids on the Block had lots of
hits/Chines food makes me sick/I like girls who wear Abercrombie & Fitch"
song) I like Rage and all but that one song on the Crow soundtrack has the
immortal words:

AIDS is killing the entire African nation

Mark, I think it is time you quit reading a given bit of material for the
immediate wording and *try* and understand the intent. The "African Nation"
being spoken/sung about has NOTHING to do with Africa as a
continental/tectonic plate. It has to do with those people that feel a
unity/gathering in the term "African" and have formed a more abstract
definition of what it means to be a "Nation." This is more a
super-social/uber-political force than it is a standard descriptive use of
terminology.

I think he's using the term "nation" in the same way the term "Indian
nations" was once used. Not to refer to a geographical distribution, but rather to a
race of people. In this case, black people. Besides, "African nation" rolls
off the tounge better than "African continent." It's kinda slant rhyme and
alliteration.

Just my 2.

By two minutes you beat me? I knew I shouldn't have looked up the word
"alliteration." Lord knows, we see enough bad spelling on this list that a
little from me should go unnoticed. ;-)

Hey, but at least you had the common decency to check your wording first ...
more than I can often say. Makes you a better guy IMO. :)

You know, this is what I thought the first time I head this too. Until the
next few lines in the song.

"Supposedly a vaccine is under preparation....

Instead we'll kill them off, take their land, and go there for vacation."

That sounds more like a place description than, say Cabrini Green (Where a
good percentage of the "African Nation" lives). As in another place not next
door. As in another continent.

Try out some PC-Games. The background-music can mostly be play with a
normal CD-player. And it's pretty cool for SR too.
Try DSA, MechCommander3, or any other game you have..

As an African , I thought I would pick up the ball here.

Africa is the most fragmented and divisive continent. Tribal divisions
still break
out in open warfare regularly. The reason the UN called for the entire
African continent
to declare HIV / AIDS a national emergency in each nation is because
it is wiping us out.
The virus has done so well because of the lack of communication and
cooperation, the
prevalance of corruption in government and ever present warfare and
conflict.

Africa has probably never been in more trouble.

Abserootry. I see a lot of stuff like that happening; my personal fav would
be "Tir hardcore." Think Enya or Clannad on crack. :) It's hard to find
something like this now (which is why I'm going to try to write something,
one of these years), but to get a few ideas of these unusual cross-genre
blends, you can start with electronica. I think Enigma falls into that
category. Tony Levin, the bassist for Peter Gabriel and King Crimson, has
done some really interesting stuff with a bunch of 'world musicians.' On
one album he plays the Chapman Stick (a vicious-sounding guitar-bass hybrid)
with one guy on Native American drums and another on East Indian flute and
an assortment of woodwinds. On another album he plays with a variety of
guys who've collaborated with Peter Gabriel. Neither album is particularly
hard-edged, but it'll give you some nice ideas-- and it's all instrumental
so it makes decent background music.

When I think about music in SR, the operative words are variety and chaos.
You've got old genres resurrected and reinterpreted (and don't forget that
even 1990's music will be considered ancient), really old genres being
merged with newer sounds, dizzyingly complex orchestrations made possible
with OMNI and direct neural control, genres for each culture, race, and all
possible permutations thereof, etc., etc. There will always be blues, and
who knows where jazz will have explored.

Of course corp-manufactured pop will be stronger than ever. If you imagine
several of the megas (or sub-megas) getting into production, you can guess
that every week will have the next best thing (which anyone with taste
despises). The current trend-of-the-week in my game is dynamica. A
description I used in my PBEM game:

"You walk in the club and are subjected to a wall of low, pulsing notes.
All monotone, no variation in rhythm, just wildly fluctuating volume levels.
It sucks and leaves you longing for the days of Japanese ork reggae bands."

Nuts... forgot to mention one other thing. There are bound to be a lot of
Japanese and other Asian music groups popular in Seattle and the like, what
with all the megas there. The bands might well blend Japanese and English
lyrics and styles. Fortunately this is real easy; you can find such bands
today if you check out your import sections. Can't say I know any
off-hand...

...but if you want something in Korean and English, go with Shin Hae-Chul,
aka Crom. Does techno, industrial, rock, and odd fusions of those. Pretty
dark stuff with moments of light, which also helps. The album "Monocrom,"
where he collaborates with an English guitarist, has some music that would
fit pretty well into, well, a lot of places. It also has a traditional
Korean 'opera' style blended in to a few songs.

I seem to be good at that. First pointing out that Sailor Bubba's skirt
should've been shorter, now this... :)

Actually, I can definitely picture some Japanese ork reggae. Think about
it... first of all, even now I'm pretty sure there's some underground reggae
in Japan. Second, if the Rastas thought Jamaica was Hell, think how orks
must feel about Yumi...

In all the descriptions I ever read of SR music it says that it is almost
all electronic, so I always think of it as being like Atari Teenage Riot
with wierder vocals. Having said that, I could never satisfactoraly have a
world where no one did covers of songs by the Clash.
