ok i just tthink this one should be tossed out:

there are _2_ irc net works on on EFNet and one on Undernet
EFnet servers have standard RFC addresses

Undernet servers have undernet.org as the domain and usually the
city.state.country as the node
(i.e.)
albany.ny.us.undernet.org <Phlat's closest undernet server>

Doc_X said he is adding a permenant channel on the IRC but i am not sure as to
whether it is the EFNet or the UnderNet as i have seen him on _both_ nets.

If you care to experience the irc either telnet to sci.dixie.edu 6677 (telnet
client that is mobbed not prefered) or ftp cs.bu.edu and look under
irc/clients/<your system> for the latest irc client. there are clients for
unix (the original), vms (version II now if you have problems compiling this
mail me), and dos/windows along with mac clients.

happy netting

Just thought I'd better point out that EFnet and Undernet aren't actual
physical networks, like, say, BITNET and the Internet. They're just the names
given to the server networks for each system...
Both use the same programs, and, if you're running a client on one net, you
can connect it to the other network by simply changing servers...

EFnet has about 4000 users, while I've heard that Undernet has about 200, max.
However, EFnet suffers greatly from a problem known as netsplits, where links
between servers die, breaking EFnet in two, so that there are efeectively two
Efnets...
The main role-playing channel on irc is #AD&D. Don't be put off by the name,
though, as all sorts of games are discussed. A bot, `noppa', serves the
the channel, and rolls dice - just saying "3d6" will have it roll 3d6 and add
the result together. Saying "sr(4)", however, will make it roll 4 dice, accor-
ding to the Shadowrun rules - ie. sixes get rolled again, and added on, etc.

I hang out on irc most of the time I'm on a computer, whether I'm talking or
not (X-window is a wonderful thing! ;) and I'm organising a Shadowrun campaign
at the moment... My bot, Cyberbot, "possesses" channels #Shadowrun, #Matrix,
and #Shadowlands, which is where shadowrunners would normally end up, on irc,
not that there are that many...

Anyway, if you're on, do a /whois Dodger, and message me... especially if you
have any questions, or want to join in the campaign.

Undernet suffers from netsplits too...but also has less lag and users making it
a fledgling network.

I am going to be setting one up on Undernet. That is where I have my
server so I can control whether or not I will let myself run a 'bot on my
server :-)

If I get things set up nicely, I will, maybe, put one on EFNet. However,
I want to encourage people to use the Undernet. The server ops are
friendly and will actually help you. The only reason I am on EFNet, is
that is where a lot of people I know hang out.

Try out my server sometime if you are in the Southeast US. It's
tampa.fl.us.undernet.org 6667. And if you see me online, say hi!

To add to Dodger's comment about IRC and #ad&d... and I feel that I am
qualified to talk about it... :)

#ad&d is set up as a virtual tavern called the "Hideaway" where adventurers
from all walks (a/d&d, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, you name it, we have it) can meet
and interact and have drinks and mess around. Also, people arrange games to
play ONLINE, and play them on other channels (to keep #ad&d for people who
just want to habg out and talk).

If you're ever on, look for me there. The nick is Hawke, and I am the
"unofficial" barkeep/innkeeper of the place. Other "high-ranking"
(i.e. people
to respect) include Jone and Magel. Once again, come on over if you're ever on
the net, and I'll buy you a drink.

Yes, I am the Dodger.. Ah, well... I don't just use a computer for irc-ing
when I'm logged in - I'm usually programming, reading mail, running Xmosaic,
etc., etc. so I make full use of the virtual desktop, as you can imagine..
All of which means that my irc window is not always on the screen that I'm
looking at... However, I have noted the problem of getting my attention and
have made provisions (modified my irc setup so that I get a beep when I'm
messaged). Hopefully, Sir Hawke, that should solve the problem...
Apologies for any inconvenience caused...
As for the channels, well, I'm afraid that I'm the only person on them 99% of
the time, but occaisionally, a few people might turn up, for a chat, or, even,
a spot of roleplying...
However, hopfully that will change, and we'll begin to get more people
on the Shadow channels... ]<<<<<

If any of you out there want to play shadowrun and have irc access, mail
me with your character and detailed background. I will try to set up a
time in which the most people can play. Also, you can send me a SRCG file.

Stupid question time,
what is an srcg file? where would I look in order
to learn about it? And how long will this invite be open for, I don't
have irc access now, but will in a couple of weeks.

My guess is that it's the output of Paolo Marcucci's Shadowrun character
generator (abbreviates to "SRCG," see?) for Windows, downloadable from his
page.

SRCG (ShadowRun Character Generator) is a program for windows or DOS. I
can play anytime for the next couple years.

I believe the srcg file is a file from a character generation program that
can be downloaded from a listmembers web page.

Heya... Since this recently came up, I thought I'd post an idea that, as
usual, I've stolen fgrom elsewhere. And I wanted to see what you guys
thought...

We already have a decent number of regulars and lurkers here who show up on
IRC, but what would you guys think of a regular Chat Night, like once a
week, when we could geta bunch of us regulars here online together and
actually get to talk real time. :] David Beuhrer actually gave me the
idea, inadvertantly, when he told someone on IRC that he'd hate to see IRC
with both me and Spike on at the same time :]

So who'd be interested in an endeavor like this, and what do you think
would be a good night for it? Frisday or Saturday early evening, US time?
(Since the majority of both our list members and IRC members are in the
same Time zones as the US and Canadian contingents :] )

Anyways, just an idea... :]

Bloody good idea, old bean. I am in. But wait, uhm, what time do you have
then there (just once tried to reconfigure WIN 95 for different timezones
and messed horribly). Any way, for me it would be Saturday early eve best.
But if it came through, I'll go on Fridays to. The mean thing was allways
than I am IRC theres more or less hallow emptines. So maybe a organized
thingy would be nice.
Just say next friday/saturday eve and I am in.

I'd be willing to give it a try, but I'll have download mIRC first.
And as far as it goes, Fridays after about 4:30 pm EST (9:30pm GMT?)
are pretty busy (there's about 45 min to an hour around 5:30 that's
clear, but that's it:) until around 11:30pm or (sometimes) 3 am. But
Saturdays are usually clear:)

> Anyways, just an idea... :]

Well, I'd be willing to give it a try, like I said. The one and only
other time I tried IRC, there was a netsplit as soon as I made a
comment -- I thought I'd scared everyone off:)

Well, hopefully I will get around to IRC this coming week. This sounds like a
good idea, since we have been doing it on AOL for around a year now :-)
Any time but Thursday (the AOL chat) would be fine.
