And now for something completely different....

I recenly order the Cyberpunk soundtrack from Gold Rush Games (I posted
information earlier last month). While I haven't gotten it, it has
gotten me to thinking... (a dangerous pastime, I know).

What music would make up the ULTIMATE Shadowrun soundtrack?

Now, before everyone starts rattling off their favourite bands and
screaming "MINE'S THE BEST", let's first take a very brief moment to look
at what makes a good soundtrack.

A movie sountrack needs to work to emphasize the motion of the scene. A
romance scene will usually have slow woodwinds or strings; an action seen
deals with harsh brasses, drums, or anything else that screams (electric
guitar). A detective investigating has hesitant woodwinds slowly drinving
you nuts with anticipation. Deaths are enhanced by slow drawn strings
(Barber's Adagio for Strings from Platoon is EXCELLENT [albiet rather
cliche'])

In addition, music MUST have "balls" to it. It shoudl be alive with raw,
unbridled emotion. In Blade Runner, Vangeliss slow synthesized pieces
were alive with energy even though they were low-key. On Bablylon 5,
"The Requiem for the Line", played during Sinclaire's flashback to the
defeat of the Terrans can actually bring a tear to your eye. The Indiana
Jones Theme brings to mind the happy days of yesteryear and the Saturday
Morning Serial. The Cure's _Burn_ from the movie "The Crow" is packed
with gobs of emotion and fit very well the fast-paced movie.

All have some kind of "balls".

So, assuming a Shadowrun story has the requiste parts of romance,
investigation, action, death, what do you put on to a 60 to 70 minute
soundtrack?

Here's some of my suggestions:
Apotheosis O Fortuna
Grand Canyon (sndtrk) Main Title
Enigma Age of Innocence
Tool Sober
Louis Armstrong Wonderful World
Enya The Celts
Conan (sndtrk) Battle of the Mound (esp last 1:45 or so)
Glen Danzig Black Aria (not sure which track from
this album)
Barber Adagio for Strings

Hmm, that's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Anyways,
you get the idea.

Let the discussion flow....

Ah, what fun this'll be. Here's a list of some of the albums
that we've listened to while playing Shadowrun; I may try to come up with
specific songs later on.

Alice in Chains Dirt
Blue Oyster Cult Spectres
Coverdale/Page [self-titled]
Dag Righteous
Drivin-N-Cryin Smoke
Jethro Tull Crest of a Knave
Led Zeppelin Boxed Set I, Boxed Set II, live bootlegs
Motorhead 1916

That's only a partial listing, based on what's in my own personal
CD collection (we haven't listened to my vinyl stuff recently.) From
other collections have come a lot of so-called "alternative" groups,
perhaps the best of which was The Cranberries.

My personal favorite for the PERFECT Shadowrun Music Is Queensryche's Empire.
Someone at FASA appears to agreee with me, because if you'll look in the SRII
rulebook, I forget which page..... One of the 'runners has a shirt which has
Empire's Logo on it.... I discovered this after my younger brother accidentally
bought the album, gave it to me, and the First thought I had after listening to
it was "This is Perfect for Shadowrun...."

Actually, my thought on what makes a great SR soundtrack is that stuff
like Queensrych is rather out of place (personal opinion). I think that
techno or techno-indutrial mix-tapes are the ultimate. Cutting edge
electronic music mixed by cutting edge DJ's like Ron D Core, DJ Keoki,DJ Dan
(haven't heard from him in a while), and so on, including local DJ's
(such as Alex here in Tucson). You can go with cool, phat house music to
set everything up (club scenes), go with ambient or mellow trance for
slow times, and with hard-core german trance or industrial for the run
itself, or really any combat! And if you don't like tapes and prefer
CD's, there are some new CD's out that are pretty damn cool, such as
Adventures with DJ Keoki. Very cool, very hot-mixed.

I disagree. yes Techno is good, but so is heavy metal and such.

Heck - its hard to beat Queensrych: Operation Mindcrime for good ShadowRun
music. It IS cyberpunk music.

Remember - in shadowbeat, it mentions that music which is fairly respected on
the streets is not music with good instrumentation (which can be done by
computer) but rather music with MEANING. Mindcrime fits that rather well
(as does empire). Many times I notice that techno (especially house techno)
has little meaning and is rather similar. Yes its good to dance to, but after a
while it becomes repititious.

Hmm, Industrial-techno type music that fits this..

NIN!!!!!!!!

Cannot top the lyrics or meaning, and in my opinion, but this is the
arguable one, the style. People who don't like it either take offense to
songs like "Closer to God", or don't like the style. The meaning though,
tops out.

Side note. Concrete Dreams has top rate instrumentation, and this is what
put them on top. They were the first true musicians to use synth-links.

For a good reference to your idea though, read _Little Heroes_. I cannot
remember the author, but it is a great view of music in an Cyberpunk setting.

Ministry and Devo, what a combination :). If you ever want a "corporate"
theme song, check out the "Devo Corporate Anthem" sometime; it's on
"Greatest Misses".

Queensrych never impressed me. Probably because they're trying very hard to
sound like Pink Floyd, which also never really impressed me, probably
because I don't like being depressed, for some strange reason.

If you want meaning with your rebellion, how about Velvet Undergound or the
Sex Pistols.

How retro is retro? How about a swing club? Swing's just passed it's 100th
anniversary, so I'd guess there's be some kind of small ressurgeance in
"recent" history.

I could go on and on...

I suppose it's just me, but while BOC is one of my most favoritest bands,
and they're great mood music (and nowhere near as depressing as Pink Floyd,
not counting the stuff Moorcock wrote for them like "Veteran of the Psychic
Wars"), I'd hardly describe them as having a "Shadowrunner attitude." Or
mabye I just have a different idea as to what that kind of attitude is :).

Well,
I just mean that a 'runner has to be ready to die at any time. Since
that's what the song's about, it seems rather appropriate to me. :)

Ok, then it is me, because that's not what I'm hearing. It's not about
dying, but about accepting death (don't fear it) as a natural part of life.

Then again, most runners I've seen tend towards having an invulnerability
complex; it's the mercs that have the "I could be next" attitude. That's
probably what separates street meat from the professional soldier.

Actually, Operation: Mindcrime fits with SR far far better than Empire
does (read the lyrics, it's perfect). Also, the Queensryche symbol
exists outside of the band and has for many years.

If we're looking for songs with fit the Shadowrun attitude,
that's a completely different beast than songs which are good to listen
to to _play_ Shadowrun. Sure, there'll be some crossover -- but not a
whole lot, IMHO.
For example, as much as I like N.I.N., they'd really be too fast
and loud for a gaming environment -- though as the soundtrack for a dark,
futuristic, suspenseful kind o' thing (like the game would be if it were
in real-time) they'd do great.

I would think some of Yes's stuff should be somewhere on the list.
Not their real popular stuff, but, they have some songs that would
really fit for mages and shamans. Some of the stuff off of Tales from
Topographic Oceans, Union, and the new Talk album spring to mind.
Also, maybe a cut or two from Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe. I
could send specific titles later.

Another CD that is very cool is The Crow motion picture soundtrack. I use
it presently in club and bar.

For trash session, I often put Suicidal Tendencies (Feel like shit, Lights
camera revolution & How Will I Laugh Tomorrow).

For making NPC and contact pretty weird, use classical music, and make the
NPC dance on it while talking to the players.

It adds color, n'est ce pas?

Definitely. I'd also suggest early Cocteau Twins for some interesting, and
sometimes haunting "mood music."

Interesting that I should be reading this only a few moments
after thinking the same type o' think about Jimmy Page & Robert Plant's
new version of the relatively unknown 'Zep classic "Friends." Pretty
much anything off of the new "No Quarter," plus any of the older stuff in
the vein of "Friends" ("Your Time Is Gonna Come," "That's The
Way,"
etcetera) could be used _very_ effectively to set an interesting mood,
about 20 degrees off of the usual "cyberpunk" foreboding.

"Bright light, almost blinding
Black night, still they're shining
In a star, keep on climbing,
Looking for what I knew.

Had a friend, he once told me
You got love, you ain't lonely
Now she's gone, leavin' me only
Looking for what I knew

Oooh, I'm tellin' you, now

much to my surprise I think I see the word "Shadowrun" in the

so, any idea if it's still available?

There was a CD made in 1999 under license from FASA by one Alex Cremers
and published by Orion Design Studio as number ORCD 001. The tracklist is:

1 - Voices From The Past
2 - Cityscape 2056
3 - Native American Cruiser
4 - The Otaku (Children of the Matrix)
5 - An Eye For An Eye
6 - Shadowrun
7 - Corporate Anxiety
8 - Foreshadows
9 - Comes The Dawn
10 - Physical Security
11 - Into The Labyrinth
12 - The Arena Conflict
13 - Epilogue

Other albums published, according to the CD inlay, were:

ORCD 002 Vampire: The Masquerade - A Beast I Am
ORCD 003 Call of Cthulhu - Horror on the Orient Express
DMCD1001 Battle Themes - Aeons of Warfare
DMCD1020 Dark Themes from Beyond - Part I: Where Evil Lurks
DMCD1030 Arthur
DMCD2000 The Hunter Hunted

I don't suppose any of these will be easy to get hold of nowadays, but:
Orion Design Studio happens to have had the exact same address as The
Lonely Mountain game store in Antwerp, Belgium :) Unfortunately, that
store shut for good about two years ago, but the owner now runs Red
Dragon Games, also in Antwerp: http://www.reddragon.be/Docs/home.php (in
Dutch) so you could try to contact them (click on the link
"Contactgegevens") and see if they might still have a copy.

The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
