Ahh but he's starting to get worried about the GameCube ATM, two
multi-platform games have just been altered, one has just become X-Box
exclusive and the other will only be available for the PS2 and X-Box. The
PS2 is really out of date now and Bill Gates had been thinking that his
greatest loss-maker might make a comeback... Then GameCube exclusives
started hitting the top of the all-consoles charts.
Cooperating with Nintendo does not appear to be high on Microsoft's
priority list at the moment.
The cooperation is on the part of the software developers, they want to
sell the games they write to make the most money, if none of the big three
(as it were) are willing to pay for exclusivity then it goes multi platform.

How so? Do you mean that in the "everything is obsolete by the time it comes
off the shelf"? I don't really think the PS2 is obsolete quite yet.

It is. Just not dead yet.
The graphics power of an X-Box or Game Cube is much higher than that of the
PS2.
How old is that thing now? 3, 4 years?

I have to agree with you there. It may be the older of the "big three" (PS2,
X-Box, GameCube), but it's far from out of date! You also have to remember
that the PS2 is sold and supported in a MUCH larger number of countries than
either of the other two, particularly the X-Box.

And do you know what? That doesn't mean squat. What matters is the
overall quality/quantity of games made for a system. When PS1, N64, and
Dreamcast came out I bought the N64 because I thought it was better then
the other two when it came to what it could do. Which turned out to the be
the better system? PS1, and not because of graphics quality, but because
of the overwhelming number of games that were made for it.

This time around I bought a PS2, because it could play 99% of the games
made for the PS1 and if Sony didn't change it's business model then game
designers would be able to continue to crank out games for the PS2. I
wasn't about to get burned by Nintendo again (granted there were some great
games for the N64, but they numbered less than 20). And to my knowledge
the XBox only has one great game (albiet I would buy an XBox if I could
afford it just to play Halo), and one game does not a console make.

Anyway, how to dovetail this into Shadowrun...

The PCs are hired by a game software company to steal the hardware specs
from a game console company. It turns out the software company signed an
exclusive contract with the game console, but the console company is being
stingy and not releasing all of the specs because they (the console maker)
are under the misguided impression that if the software company's titles
are competitive with the console's titles that that will be a "bad thing"(tm).

The software company realizes that they will go out of business if they
can't get the consoles specs, so they are willing to invest in the PCs run
to the point of equipping them and sending them to Japan (where the
headquarters of the console's company is). Run Japan in a Black Rain
fashion in that the PCs never get a chance to get centered in the
environment/culture of cyberJapan.

Though that runs the risk of everyone ending up with the equivalent of

Or Unix. Or Windows. Or C++. Or 120V, 60Hz power. Or the imperial
measurement system. Or...

Lets face it - when it comes to marketing technology, the winner has
nothing whatsoever to do with the actual merits of the technology involved.

Which is why I think marketing degrees should be illegal...
