Good morning to all,

For those people that have the NAGM or play hougan (?)
characters, what is the difference between being a hougan and
being a shaman? Can you be both or must you be one or the
other?
This came up in a recent game where a Gator shaman who
is from Louisiana wanted to perform some hougan ritual and a
discussion occurred about whether houganism is different from
shamanism. All input welcome.

I don't think there's too much of a difference, except in attitude toward
magic and life in general. Sort of like the difference between a mage and a
shaman...

It's to point of view that's more different. I shaman gets his/her power
through the totem, a houngan gets his power from the loas and there are
LOTS of them. Major and minor ones. They are like spirits hanging around
all the time and you can force them to help you or just ask them or make
a deal with them. It's all a big negotiation thing and not staying in
character like it is the shaman way of life.

Mmm.. I would say that it's possible that he aid in the ritual, I think
mixing tradition is mentioned somewhere in the grimthingy and I would
apply it here. If he's able to perform a voodoo ritual all by himself?
IMO it's a big NO! 'cause then a shaman would be able to perform hermetic
rituals as well and I men rituals and not just casting spells at bigger
range.
If you got more questions on voodoo and houngans just drop me a mail
bye,
Stefan
