Subject: Shapechange, auras, and spells in astral space
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 93 04:15:39 CET
>>>>>[I decided to take the time to reread all sections in SR2 and the SR2
Grimoire about astral space to clear up some of the debates.
From p. 90 SR2 Grimoire: "An aura is an energy fieldwithin the
within the etheric
body. The aura of living beings is active, generating astral signals that
a skilled magician can interpret with often-amazing accuracy."
p.139 SR2: "A focus, by virtue of its nature, creates a pathway between
the two realms.(Meaning the mundane and astral worlds) Through this channel,
an astrally present magician can cast a spell at the focus' physical
component. Because the spell is affecting the physical materials of the
focus, the spell must be a physical type." This is where you get powerballs
grounding out into the spelllock that your mage used to lock the invisibility
spell onto you. Notice that the spell doesn't automaticaly groundout,
there is a test that must be made. The info is on p.139 SR2. Notice,
agian, that unless the spell is an area affect physical spell only the
person or object that is in direct contact with the focus will be harmed.
(That's right, a powerbolt cast at the focus will blast you too if it is
in your pocket. Other than that if you have no ACTIVE conection to astral
space then you are safe.

There are ways for mana spell to ground out into the real world though.
This is done through an actively astral percieving/progecting magician.
Opps. Include duel natured beings in that too. These mana spells only
affect the target even if it is area affect! Phsyical spells can ground
out like this as well but if it is an area affect spell it will still
cover an area. Finally, no manipulation spells can be cast from astral
space because there is a physical affect that accompanys the spell
and that just doesn't happen without your body present.

One last thing. a spell cast from astral space cannot groundout
through another spell, quickened or sustained! That is why quickening
is perfered to useing spelllocks. They both remove the +2 from your
target numbers but the spell lock can become a target for an astral spell.
The quickened spell can't get you killed.]<<<<<
