Subject: Silencers as Gas Venting

I was thunking of something I read in an American Handgunner magazine a
few months ago, when they were talking about the SOCOM pistol trials and
the development of an "assault pistol" for the military as being an
alternative to the SMG (and breathe...;-)

One line talked about a silencer as being effective as a compensator/gas
venting. Gas Venting in SR works in a similar manner to compensators in
modern (today's) times. The device acts to reduce muzzle flip not by
directing gas upwards and pushing the muzzle down, but by having the gas
deflect off the expansion ports and push the muzzle forward. This is why
weapons with side ports are still effective at reducing muzzle flip (not
recoil).

Since a silencer would have essentially the same sort of construction as
a compensator/gas venting device, I think it should be given the
effectiveness of gas venting 1 (at least).

Any opinions?
