So does this emply that for a silencer to work on a snipers rifle that
the round need to be subsonic, and hence traveling much much slower than
a normal round???

Is there anyone out there that can verify this. And not just from their
personal beliefs.

If this is the case then you can all forget puting a silencer on those SM-3s
and WA-2100, the rounds are just too fast, and slowing them down would
decrease their effectivness to ZIP.

This is absolutely correct. I've posted the math already so I'll spare you
the boredom :).

Another point to think about: sniper rifles traditionally are of a large
bore; 30.30, 30.06, .50cal HB... Putting a silencer on these types of
weapons is a little unfeasable (read "stupid").

Besides, as one of those "Dark Thought Pub" guys said (sorry, don't remember
your name), flash suppressors are of much more use to a sniper than a
silencer would be, and for good reasons, too.

Actually, _both_ of us said it, and I'm the Dark Thought Publications guy.
He's the Doom Technologies and Weapon Systems dude. :)

(evidently emacs' idea of "appropriate" messages to append my sigfile to

That is why somebody made sound supressors [design specifically fpr large
bore weapons...Silencers will NOT work for anything except for converting
a perfectly good lrg bore weapon into a grenade.

If you can dent somebody's skull from behind far enough forward so they need
Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon to make their nose look right for the
funeral, who CARES about a silencer? Flash is a lot easier to trace back than
a report.

Sniper brings down a Renraku company guy in an alley.

Scenario 1: With Silencer

Renraku goon: Look at that muzzle flash! *sprays it with his LMG*
Sniper: Aaaaargh. *thud*

Scenario 2: With Flash Supressor

Renraku goon: What the DRE--
Sniper: *cackle* There goes another goon...

See? =)
