Subject: Silly Speed Examples

I was reading the vehicle section in my BABY last night, and when I read the
examples I noticed something I had never seen before. Under the section on
SPEED it says you can figure a vehicles speed in MPH by multiplying the
vehicles meters per combat turn (m/ct) rate by .75, and to KPH by 1.2. The
next section is on Acceleration, and Chazz the Spazz is trying to out run
some Lone Star goons. He is traveling at 50 m/ct at the start and
accelerates up to 70 m/ct at the end. So, quick math shows us that Chazz
was zooming along at 37.5 MPH or 60 KPH at the beginning only to speed up to
a whopping 52.5 MPH or 84 KPH at the end. Maybe he should take some lessons
in speed from Racer X, and his Mach 6. This guy is flying (almost
literally) down Central Ave (5 lanes, light traffic) at 250 m/ct, being
chased by a pair of LS cruisers doing 275 m/ct. Or, Racer X - 187.5 MPH,
300 KPH and LS - 206.25 MPH, 330 KPH. These three would be through the
entire metroplex in like an hour at these speeds. But then one of the
cruisers speeds up (guess the other cop is sane) to a max of 317 m/ct. Wow!
This guy is now going 237.75 MPH or 380.4 KPH!!! But the madness soon ends
when Racer X (who has slowed to a mere 125 m/ct) rams (is rammed?) by
Cruiser #2, who has dropped back down to 250 m/ct. So lets see, Racer X
93.75 MPH or 150 KPH rams the cop going 206.25 MPH or 330 KPH. I am
surprised that anyone survived the crash.

Well, anyway, this was all just done for fun. I hope that a big debate over
the merits of speed conversion values, or the use of cheese cartoon
character names in examples doesn't start. ;-) Just something to think
about on this Friday 13th.

Racer X doesn't drive a car called the Mach 6. To the best of my knowledge,
Racer X (a/k/a Rex Racer) didn't bother naming his car. It was his father
and brother (Pops and Speed, respectively) who named their car the Mach 5.

You've never watched "World's Wildest Police Chases" have you? :)

Chases with triple digit speeds on roads with noticeable traffic are
not unheard of. Usually it's more like 120 MPH, but there's one big
thing to remember about vehicle combat in SR: the Rigger is the one
driving.

R2 author Jon Szeto did an article for TSS one time explaining some
of the background of what exactly the Vehicle Control Rig headware
does. It basically hijacks the part of the brain that normally
controls the body's autonomic functions, and puts it to work
regulating all the stuff like fuel injector ratios, valve timing,
spark plug firing rate, gear ratio, anti-lock brake & traction
control, and countless other vehicle functions, in order to squeeze
every last drop of performance from the engine and make sure that it
transfers to the road in such a way that the car goes exactly the
direction the rigger wants it to.

Considering the above, The examples given in the BBB3 don't seem
quite as silly (the fact that the cops aren't Riggers means that
there is still going to be quite a bit of silly, unfortunately) One
thing I do think that deserves criticism, Central Ave. is classified
as "Open Terrain" even at those speeds. I think speed should factor
into the classification of terrain, but that's just me.

Go grab your copy of the BBB3, and check out the sequence of examples
on pages 141-145, 147-148, and a separate example on 154.

Come back when you're done. :)

Don't confuse the issue with facts. I'm sensitive to the use of Speed Racer
examples, if only because I've had the damned song bouncing in my head
pretty much non-stop for 23 years. After a while, you start noticing these
things....

Or a satellite uplink. *Them* I remember....

Errr,... Racer X is the guy they use to do the examples in R2.

He's also a character from the old cartoon "Speed Racer". The main
char had a car that would put Inspector Gadget to shame. That was who
Patrick was refering too.

<sigh> doesn't anyone remember the classics?

[SR comment so its not (all) OT]
So has anyone tried to make Speed's Mach 5 yet?
With all the trimmings? (Including those jump 'springs'?)

I know that's who he was, but why would you assume that's
who he meant, when it's a character in a SR sourcebook and
this is a SR list? Just sounds like common sense to me.

Yes, I'm quite old enough to remember that, and more.

I haven't read much of RIGGER 2, for one thing, and was unaware of that
particular use of the character name. It looked like a grunged pop culture
reference to me.

Then kindly refrain from jumping on me when I use my own frame of reference.
