Howdy, all! I sent a message on Friday regarding the above topic, but I
haven't received it back yet, and haven't seen any replies, so I'm resending
it. If this appeared and there were replies, could someone please let me
know?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Howdy, all! I need names for some(quite a few actually...say 10-20?) of the
smaller corps out there. Two of the players' characters in my upcoming
campaign are former corp mages...(unusual, yeah, but independently arrived
at). Also, could someone who has the Lone Star sourcebook please contact me?
Another player is planning on running a former Lone Star patrolman/officer.
Info would be greatly appreciated.

This should be a lot of fun. There are two former corp mages(one elf/one
human), an elven physad, an ex-LoneStar officer(elf), a troll (actually
Minotaur) rigger and a dwarven decker.

It'll be my first time running Shadowrun, so I may be askin' for a lot of
advice from ya'll. }:)

If you have the Seattle Sourcebook, just look in that and pick some names
that you like. Or you could make up names as you go along.

<plug>Download NERPS: Underworld from Paolo's site, there's an article in
there about playing police officers as PCs.</plug> Lone Star will still be
a useful (necessary?) sourcebook next to that article, though.

It appeared. However i think something funny was going on Friday as
some 6 emails i sent that day came back after 3 days timed out 'would
not send', though i noted this morning that the retries yesterday got
to the list (slowly). Probably an internet rather than Shadowrn
specific problem but only Mark I's likely to have a good idea.

A lot of mages tend to have had corporate training, simply because
for the 'hermetic' side its the easiest way to get the sponsorships
for a good college.
As to corporate names, oh i'm no good, try rearranging words from the
examples in say the Seattle sourcebook or off a list of real
companies (eg from the web)

I have the sourcebook in question, however unless you have a pretty
small question you will either have to manage or get it. Its got a
load of stuff on police procedures, what the lonestar kits like,
company organisation, new toys (guns, IC, decker utilities etc) some
sample cop stats, and vehicles. All useful but.

Lot of elves (but they are 'good' looking which encourages tham and
from a 'game mechanics' viewpoint only elven shamen (for charisma)
are really seriously beneficial), but a good selection, a dawarf and
hes not the rigger!

Assuming they are balanced characters could be a good selection, you
have the basics covered, as long as the decker or someone else can
use a gun reasonably to back up the cop who i assume can all looks ok.
(based on scant info but anything else and you would be there for
hours typing it in)

The easiest way to create corperate names is to take a few
of the big corperations from the present day and merge them.
e.g. British Biotechnia and Roche and make Roche biotech a
company that in 2050 in a medium level corperation with a
expertise in Biotechnology and gengenering. If you use most
of the present day corps you should be able to build up
quite a portfolio.

Actually I quite like that idea so I may start to compile
the list myself.

As far as I can see playing a lone star cop is similiar to
any other runner with the possible exception of needing a
specialist skills e.g. Law

Etiquette skills would also be very important maybe
something like Etiquette "cop", "street", "mafia" .... etc

Another possible idea is to have the cop specialise his
unarmed combat the following way.
Unarmed combat
-Subduing combat
--restraining combat

The combination is OK but I would be very careful with the
amount of magic-users you have in the group as it could
become overbalanced towards the magical side.

Good Luck, and by the way you never stop learning new GM
tricks.

You mean, like Etiquette (Law Enforcement)? The Cop contact has this
skill, so...

Nope. Restraining combat is not a single technique. It's the same as
subduing combat, prolly. Besides, specializing in a single technique
is stupid, and no sane man would do that, IMHO.
Make him specialize this way:
Unarmed Combat
Aikido or Hapkido or Aikijujitsu or Jujitsu

Wow, what an idea...I wish I could put everything in to even a weeks' worth
of postings to help you out. We've had tons of changes over the last seven
years of game writings. Currently, the big bad wigs in our game concern
"Gran Dansk", a seond tier corp that is based in Oslo Norway that is lending
strange volumes of help to the newly forming nation of Siberia. All sorts of
game kinks, including sanctioned UN and Corporate Council Actions. Hell, the
group has even found Ares working both sides of the conflict. But heh, we
are -"Macro Scale" version of Shadowrun game play.
