Is firing out to an extreme range of 1800m (etc.) really that important?

In an urban combat situation, most firefights occur at ranges of less
than 30m. Unless your target is a group of bikers, thundering towards
you across a salt-lake being able to shoot out that far with a bow is
pretty useless, IMHO.

Also remember, as pointed out by someone early, that in ye olde days, a
group of bowmen would use arched fire at long ranges to rain down a sheet
of arrows on the approaching enemy. Hoping to take down targets of
opportunity. [God this grammar is bad, the grammar checker would spit
chips... if I had one :)]

In a world where assassination is par for the course, sniping weapons
should be effective to reasonable ranges. The Barret Mk.82 rifle can
hit a man's head at over 1500 meters; the WA-2000 can hit a man's torso
target at nearly 2000 meters.

Don't forget the Dragunov SVD, a marvelous piece of Soviet
engineering that makes up in robustness what it loses in subtlety.
