%So I'm reading Newsday this month, and low and behold, there's a great
%article on new smartgun technology.

%The article mentioned a new device being manufactured in America today that
%allows a weapon to be fired only by it's registered user.

%"Hmmm?" sez I. "Sounds a lot like that IBS safety system in CorpSec?"

%Turns out that's exactly what they're propsing. Apparently the major gun
%manufactureres are working this system out for sale by next year.

%I don't know if that's scary or reassuring. :-)

%Anyway, this set me to thinking.
%What benefits do other smartgun systems offer?
%It's been a long time since I really looked at the smartgun rules, and I'm
%sure there's plenty I missed.
%So please help.
%Aside from a -2 TN# for ranged combat, what other benefits do smartguns offer.

%Currently I'm allowing such actions as. . .

%1. Will not fire at someone the recognition circuits have registered as a
%"Friendly."

can you imagine the computing power required to do just that???????????
and detectors......... no this should definitely not be allowed.
%2. Allows user to "see" through the weapons sight with a data
%display, letting them do things like shoot around corners, and what
%have you.

the thing projects a cross over your retina, is not a cybercam so
sorry again.

%3. Can be equipped with a decker/rigger output, allowing a virtual presence
%to "deck" the gun, letting a non-combat decker/rigger see where the gun's
%user is pointing - useful for drone targeting, or even blindfire.

welll I think it's be hell setting this up, and it's have verrry limited
use.

%Anything else I'm forgetting, or other special rules you use?

nope. it's just a cyberlink, you can hook it up with a helmet HUD and perhaps do
something more with it but that's about it.

I assume that a lot of that computing is run through the brain.
It can handle LOTS of data! :-)

Ah but what about all those nifty sights? I have allowed them to be easily
modified into camera-like systems, which I should have explained before.

Well sure, but it does make things easier on the non-combatant type PC's.
They worked out all the costs, and paid hefty nuyen for the system, so I
allowed it.

But that's so boring. I like mine a little jazzier! ;-)

also in belts? :)
I'd a player once that liked to walk around with 20Kg of c12
explosive in a backpack, and a total of 80Kg in his car. When the other
players found out [after they had regained their color :) ] they forced
him to drop the explosives

Was the character a Katie Go Boom shaman? ;)

(It's a reference to a cartoon character from Animaniacs, a
Warner Bros. cartoon show in the US. The character is a
girl in her late teens who explodes in a fit of rage on a
whim, causing wholesale damage.)

Sorry I should have said that the rounds cooked off, not actually that
the belt exploded", (and it was 50 rounds less what he'd fired), ran it
as a standard attack, he and the other players were in full military
specification armour, so they had a "lot" of protection. They did
however, end up in a "Pink Panther" condition, no armour, seriously
torn clothing, fragged equipment, blackened faces, and seriously
wounded, but they survived :). They had finished the game at this point
and decided to retire for a few months to the nearest hospital for
healing and repairs. :)

See above 50 rounds, and he'd fired *about* 20 of those.

No, not quite, but in "bulk". He had 75 boxes each containing two
launchers :)
(Will he never learn that buying in bulk "cheap" is not a Good thing.)

My players found a different solution to my "Explosives fanatic", the
player in question carried about 40 lbs of CXII in his car. with
detonators remote devices etc. He got into some serious trouble with
Lone Star, when they picked him up outside "Underworld", his escape led
to some serious hurt, he was then dropped off at a Brotherhood hostel by
a "concerned" citizen who found him bleeding in the street, the
Brotherhood did what they could, and eventually a very nice man from
Arasaka offered him a deal to replace his fragged up cyberware. :) But
that's another story. :)

With a nice GM, it might just have been 118D+33 :)

One of the rare times I got to play, my character was planning a revenge
on the other PCs involving a stolen car, about 30 kg of explosive (C12,
C4, and commercial), and the apartment of two of the PCs... In the end, it
turned out to be unnecessary to bring this plan to a conclusion, because a
well-aimed LAW took care of them and the grenades they were carrying.
