Subject: Smartlink-2 and a bit on pistols

So I'm working on a character for a game, one I think is turning out well,
but I need to know one thing: what effects exactly do Smartlink-2 have? See I
don't own and don't feel like getting M&M just for that one thing, and none
of the stores around here have it in for me to peruse ;)

Also, and this is more of something just for discussion, I have a theroy that
I've applied to this chracter. Basically, I've discovered through playing
that all I ever seem to bring, or need, on a run are pistols. So I made the
character more or less a sammy, but only gave him two Ares Predator III's. I
know a lot of people who feel the need to outfit a sam with the scene from
The Matrix where Neo is carrying more guns than an infantry platoon in mind,
and I wanted to try somethign different. Now, I'm usually not one to just
stand in the middle of a firefight and throw out a ton of lead anyway, and
our GM tends to run his game like a John Woo movie, so that may make this a
little more possible. Just curious what everyone else thinks. Oh, and if
anyone has any other ideas for modifying an Ares Predator III, please let me
know. Granted, I put everything possible from the Cannon Companion on both
guns, so it's quite possible they'll just explode if I put any other mods on.
:) Thanks.

The way it was explained to me by the GM I played under initially was that
the additive of SL2 was the ability to adapt a rangefinder to use timed
grenade air explosions. So obviously it doesn't have much to do with pistols
but it's a cool enough effect. I usually just use SL1 for pistols experts
though since they won't have much use for that feature unless they're using
an ML-6. (Also I read the entry in FoF and it seems to say the same thing. I
could be wrong but that's the way I've interpreted it for this long...)

I thought the same thing, reading FoF, but what made me think it must have
other effects is that the only major difference I saw between an Predator II
and a III is that the III has an SL-2 as standard equipment. If it's only use
is grenade timing, why put in on....unless I slap on an underslung grenade
launcher...hmmmm >:).....naaah...

I've never heard of a Predator III outside of what I've seen online so I
can't testify one way or another on that. (Is it in the new Cannon Companion
I take it?) But the Pred II just comes with the standard SL integral and of
course the original Pred didn't have any bells or whistles, just a namesake.
Now the Pred III I saw online DID have a burst-fire feature too...maybe
whoever designed it felt that SL2 also does something for recoil comp.? I've
heard similar theories and seen it around a little but personally I don't
use that. As in most cases, it's up to the GM.

Ares Predator III
New and improved, the Predator III is the latest variant of this street
samurai favorite, featuring an internal smartgun-2 system (see pg. 31, M&M)
::end::

That's all there is. And reading the charts, it looks as if it's a 100 nuyen
more, a little less concealable than the original (though I have no clue why)
and a little lighter. I suppose they don't wanna give you too many rules all
in one book; it's easier to ask you to get another one for everything.

The SL-2 also gives you a -1 TN at long range and -2 TN at extreme (I think
when linked to a range finder). It also allows you to make called shots at a
+2 instead of a + 4...

Does that rangefinder have to be attached to the gun, or can be in cybereyes?

I believe either...of course, according to M&M, the range finder appears to
be part of the Smartlink.

Btw, I finally found my M&M...no called shot bonus anymore for the SL
2...whups

Thanks for the info...and yes, I seem to recall there being a range finder in
the original, so I don't see why there wouldn't be in the upgrade.

Under SR 2, the range finder was part of Eye wear, so you could get it as
part of the free .5 essence worth of cyber. Under SR 3, it seems to be part
of the Smartlink system exclusively...

It can still fall into that free .5 Essence for cybereyes. I think it
says so under the description of the smartlink system component system.

This I cannot recall seing anything about, not in an
book nor on the net. What I do remember is in one of
the first Shadowlands there where a small program you
could upload to your headware memory and when combined
with a Smartlink 2 provided the equivalent of 1 point
of recoil compensation.
If it has any interest I'll try to dig it up till
tomorrow.

I need to get that book. Well, maybe it does have some amount of recoil
comp. I've never been able to find anything about it but maybe the reference
to M&M could be where we find it... Actually now I'd really like to know.
Because recoil comp. in a BF handgun would be kewl...<weg> and SO would an
underbarrel grenade launcher!

"What's that? A pistol? A PISTOL?!? HA! Don't make me laugh..."

"Yep...just a pistol <chak> nooothin' to be concerned about...hehehe..."

::grinz:: Yet another reason that I'll probably just stick to good ol'
SR2... Of course I resist almost ANY kind of change.

Hehe....yeah it's a pretty sweet book....to paraphrase The Matrix, when you
need guns, lots of guns, accept no substitutes. And like I say, I'm a
believer in the power of two customized Predators, a high Quickness and
Athletics rating, and a willingness to try any stunt, no matter how reckless.
And the pistol grenade launcher couldn't hurt either :)

Yey I know this one. If you have a range finder you can air burst timed
grenades. And it also makes the modifiers for making a called shot +2
instead of +4. which means with its standard -2 to TN. Called shots are
made at no modifier. Except for range and light.

its a pretty damn useful piece of equipment in my opinion.
