I once saw a very interesting item in a SF series written by David Gerrold.
In his "War against the Ch'torr" series (first novel) there is a needler
rifle which uses a sighting beam similar to a laser sight, except projecting
deep ultraviolet and high infrared and invisible to the normal eye. This
beam changes continuously and randomly. It is linked to a helmet that
allows the wearer to see the frequency that the beam is on at all times,
showing him and him alone where that beam is pointing.

The series as a whole is one of the best pieces of fiction I have ever had
the pleasure to read. I suggest it highly to anyone interested in SF.
