This is an expansion on my previous post
vision systems and their uses
Anyone have a gripe about the cop out used for 2 weapon ranged combat and optic type aim
enhancers?

I spent a little time hammering these out and I would like feedback as to what people
think.

SMARTLINK 1 AND SMARTLINK 2 RULES AND DESCRIPTIONS.

Basicware: (I have long thought the difference between standard grade and alpha grade has
not been stressed enough)

smlk 1 (S1)

this gives an X shaped crosshair on the feild of vision. An ammo count also appears at the
bottom corner of vision corresponding to the hand used.

smlk2 (S2)

Much better clarity and resolution than S1.

This also gives the X shaped crosshair, but after resting on a target for a short period
it converts to a pair of concentric circles with a vertical cross linking them. The radius
of the circle is user-definable. Common practice is to make this the size of the user's
long-range group size average(helps with called shots).

Launch weapons display common longrange deviancy areas after sitting still for a short
period.

S2 is backwards compatible, but only acts as a S1 with weapons so outfitted. S2 weapons
confer the appropriate advantages.

Alpha-ware: noted with prefix a

aS1: this gives vert/horiz crosshairs, with a target box (draw a big cross then a small
square over the meeting point). The ammo count appears below the horiz line next to the
target box (again on the same side as the hand holding the gun). A barrel temperature
readout appears in the bottom corner corresponding to the gun hand. After the
manufacturer's recommended number of rounds are fired through the weapon a "weapon
service due" message appears above the temp readout, starting at green then moving
through to red if left unattended. Servicing the weapon resets the chip in it and the
message dissappears.

aS2:includes all enhancements of S2 and aS1 but the target box is available in a range of
shapes. aS2 also has a limited "leading" feature, enabling the processor to
predict target movement based on movement of the weapon (no real game effect).

Rangefinders:(remember alpha smartlinks MUST have alpha rangefinders. reference M&M,
grades and options)

Basic-ware: displays range to aiming point in m. accurate to 2 decimal places. The range
is displayed above the ammo counter.

Combined with S2, a rangefinder enables bullet drop compensation processes, and also takes
the grouping area that appears after a time with the crosshairs still, and extrapolates
that to the range displayed.

alpha-ware: much more accurate readout, accurate to 4 decimal places (can be reduced by
user. Range is displayed above the horiz line next to the targeting box, in a contrasting
colour to the ammo counter.

Combined with an aS2 a rangefinder enables more accurate "leading" of targets, a
"likely hit" % appears above to the target box.

Image Magnification technology IS compatible with the long range and extreme range bonuses
an (a)S2 in conjunction with a rangefinder gives, but only to eliminate movement TN
modifiers.

TWO WEAPON RANGED COMBAT AND SMARTLINKS.

This has bugged me for a while, see the post 'rules you hate' for my whinge.

these expand on the +2TN for each hand rule.

Two Weapon usage with any smartlink dictates that TWO separate input systems are added,
rather than just one. (see M&M for options)

The relevant modifiers are:

+2 each hand (negated with the edge ambidexterity), cumulative recoil penalties (a gun's
uncompensated recoil applies its modifier to both weapons), Additional target modifiers,
blindfire modifier, and the partial cover modifier.

Basic-ware: This is not high enough quality to enable dual targeting. the primary weapon
gains the smartlink bonus, the secondary does not. Ambidextrous characters must designate
their primary weapon at the beginning of the initiative pass.

Alpha-ware: (here I introduce a new piece of tech, the HiPower smartlink image/ballistics
processor, referred to as the HPaS1 and the HPaS2).

The Hi-Power versions of the standard alphaware processors are twice as expensive as their
counterparts, (effectively X 4 base cost for the processor) but they allow for multiple
weapon hookups.

An HPaS1 enables the user to distribute their -2 smartlink bonus between their two
weapons. A user could apply an on/off modifier of -2/-0 or -1/-1 or -0/-2. This reflects
the fact that the user only has so much concentration, and splitting their attention
between two weapons will detract from accuracy with either. Two imput

An HPaS2 user can do the same, but the advanges a rangefinder provides at long and extreme
range are NOT split, they apply to each weapon (the processor is doing all the work,
calculating trajectories) individually(remember that they work in conjunction with Image
Magnification ONLY to negate movement modifiers).

If the owner of an aS2 buys TWO(2) HPaS2 processors, they are referred to as Dual Hi-Power
Smartlink 2 processors, or a DHPaS2.

This provides an additional -1 to TNs(on top of the -2 from a smartlink or -1 for
smartgoggles). The total modifier CANNOT be better than -2 for any one hand. The options
are -1/-2 or -2/-1.

Targets: 'Same' target refers to both guns aimed at the same point. 'Additional' target
refers to each gun aimed at a different point.

Without GunCams linked to an Image link or HUD data display, Additional targets MUST both
be in the feild of vision, else one(player's choice) suffers the BlindFire penalty(+8TN)
on top of the secondary target modifier(+2).

If a new target appears DURING the combat round (was not visible at time of initiative
roll, but appeared later in the round), fire directed at it suffers the Partial Cover
modifier to simulate the gunman's divided attention. This modifier is eliminated at the
beginning of the next combat round (before the initiative roll).

Image Magnification in use INCREASES TNs due to restrictions it places on the feild of
vision (+2 for each range bracket compensated for) if the targets are not in the same
feild of vision(either the blindfire or partial cover modifiers apply). DNI adapted Image
magnification must be purchased separately for each guncam if the user wants to overcome
this.

Stuart, could you turn off the HTML encoding on your message, and set your

I don't think alphaware and standard cyberware have any real difference in
what they do. Alphaware is just better-quality cyberware -- the difference
between an off-the-rack suit and a tailor-made one, more or less. Actually,
the difference between a cheap off-the-rack suit and an expensive one;
betaware would be the tailor-made suit.

Accurate to 10 cm is nice, but I don't think it's all that practical,
leading only to confusion :)

This is, well... almost silly. Knowing to a millimeter how far away your
target is won't help you more than knowing it to 10 cm, IMHO. Now if your
job were measuring things accurately, I can see the use of having a
rangefinder that's this accurate, but for combat purposes it's far too much.

I think the reason FASA said you can't get a smartlink bonus when using two
weapons, is because it's not very easy aiming two similar crosshairs at the
same target, one with each hand. Giving the smartlink bonus to one weapon
means you're only paying attention to a single set of crosshairs, IMO, and
are not trying to aim the other one. Thus, I'd say if you want to give one
weapon the -2, then the other should get a positive modifier to hit.

Oh, yes, this'll make you friends...
