Hail Runners,

So what's the difference between a normal smartlink as seen in SR3 and a
Smartlink II, as seen throughout the net and probably some sourcebook I'm
missing?

SL-2 originally appeared in FIELDS OF FIRE. I don't want to talk much about
it, since I don't know how they've changed with MAN & MACHINE and I've
already got too many NPCs to retro-fit....

If I recall, there wasn't a whole lot of difference. The SGII "feels better"
and I think it could interact with rangefinders for bonuses at long range.
Don't quote me, though.

Field of Fire. Get it. It is the best stuff book for any game I have
seen, mainly due to the first chapter.

-SL2 can be tied to indirect fire weapons at -1 TN w/ cyber, no TN shift
w/ goggles
-Called shots are little easier. (IIRC, +2TN)
-can be mated to rangefinder, -1TN at long, -2TN at extreme

From an RP point of view, it is a smoother, more natural interface. I've
discribed that as the aimpin point being smaller, while your "instinctive"
sense of where it is is improved. ("It's like pointing a big, metal
finger. Think of it as flipping the bird, with effect.", is how I believe
I discribed it once). I also think that it means that things like ammo and
safety status aren't displayed in a head up mode, but are "known" in same
manner that a rigger knows about his gas tank or you know about your
stomach.
I've also ruled that the SL2 cyber can link into some other, homebrewed
gizmos, and can also talk to things like tactical computers (add map
integration, a rangefinder and cyber radio, and you can call heavy fire,
among other things) and cameras.

smartlink II is I suspect a combat monster's dream come true. If you're doing
SR3 you'd be best to avoid it until Man and Machine makes some call on it.
