(Sorry for digging out a very old post, but I was poking through the
archive looking for posts that I lost while upgrading my hardware,
plus any interesting threads that I missed.)

Here's an idea for a really neat helmet mounted sensor package: Take a
Body 0 Electric drone (Chassis type doesn't really matter, as the
motors are going to be stripped out for this particular design).

Body 0 drones only have the CF for a Level 1 Sensor package, but there
are the rules for Adding/Upgrading components on p.27 of R2. Depending
on how much cash you want to lay out, theoretically, you can upgrade
it to have all the sensors toys: rangefinders, ultrasound and laser
proximity detectors, video, basic radar, signature recognition
software, low-light imaging, telescopic magnification, thermographic
imaging, and flare comp.

Customize a helmet for this "Sensor Package" drone to fit in, and you
now have an essence friendly alternative to the snake eyes system.
Plus, there are options that just don't seem to have cyberware
equivalents, such as radar, or the option to add an IPA ClearSight
Autosoft.

If the Rigger riding the RC network these sensor helemets are
subscribed to has a high DFR datajack from Shadowtech, and the helmets
are all equipped with high level ClearSight Autosofts, then she gets
an almost disgusting amount of bonus dice to roll for perception
tests, and she can make those tests from the point of view of any
teammate's helmet. The benefits for tactical coordination are obvious.

Speaking about tactics, one might consider piping the sensors feeds
from one of these helmets through a datajack and into a headware
Tactical Computer. This would be an essence-friendly alternative to
getting all the senses cybered up to boost the efficency of the
TacComp.

Hmm..sounds a little bit like bending the rules a bit to me..but
there is no good reason this would not work....

This is the main option I would omit..or rather suggest be
omitted..because I as an EGM would allow this bit quicker that a lot
of other options..because use of a radar in such close proximitty to
the brain..should pretty much cook it..or at least cause cancer..

It's no more a bending the rules than the rules for the Sentry II gun
system were. I figure that if there's a canon example of a stationary
drone, then this should be kosher too.

Any drone or vehicle with a Sensor rating of 1 or higher has radar.
How long would it take for radar to "cook" a brain, in your opinion?
We might have a new mode of attack for drones now. Forget the guns,
just land the rotor drone on top of the target's head and radar him.
:)

Well..that is in direct relationship with the power of the radar..In
my experience..I have seen the birds that flew in front of the radar
on our ship..they died immediately..And then there are the brain
cancers and testicular cancers being reported by Law
Enforcement..from officers that have used hand held and dash mounted
radar units..So..as an EGM I would take that all into account when
figuring how much it is used by the PC and how quickly detrimental
affects should be felt..It would have to be a judgement call rather
than a hard fast -it takes this long-

LOL..yea..I suppose that might work ;)

Seeing as this is going to be a helmet mounted device, it's going to
be a lightweight, and not too powerful. Looking up the stats, a
Sensor-1 has a Flux Rating of 2, giving the radar a maximum range of
2km. I really don't think you'd be able to heat up your TV Dinner on
it.

Then of course there are the GMs who wouldn't even bother the players,
simply because average runner lifespan in their games isn't long
enough for a long term cancer to develop. :)

The description of the Sentry Gun in Fields of Fire mentions "pulsed
radar". This sort of radar would be less likely to cause detrimental
effects than a continuous beam radar, IMO. Perhaps that sort of radar
could be used here; after all if it's good enough for Sentry Gun
targeting, it should serve for this purpose quite nicely.

Another thing to consider would be what the SOTA in EM shielding is by
2060. If nothing else, maybe the helmet could be lined with Radar
Absorbent Materials, to help shield the wearer from the harmful
emissions.
