Hey, I have a player in my campaign with a Barret Light 50 Sniping
Rifle. Mix this with a reflex recorder, specialization in rifle
and you get an effective skill level of 8. He definitely has 8
combat pool, and doesn't mind wasting it if the target is worth
it; besides, who's gonna pick HIM off at distances of half a mile.

Of course, he doesn't get to use it much. It's too bulky to carry
around, but if the runners are planning a meet, it's always nice
to have a helping hand watching over you...

As you can tell from the subject, I want to make a sniper. What should I
assign for priorities (being he is going to be human)? And what equipment
should I give him? General suggestions are needed.

Ah, one of the most deadly things there are...

Ok, how about this.

Firearms 5 - Rifle 7 (Option to specialise in sniper rifle)
Stealth 6
Other skills to flesh out char...

Cyber eyes with flare comp, opto 3, low light and thermo.
Smart gun link.
Wired 3 (you could manage with 2, but you're much better off with 3)

Physical attributes assign as you wish, but go for high quickness, willpower
and intelligence to get a nice large combat pool.

Essentiatlly you really need TECH A with B and C placed wherever. Also you
need a sniper rifle :) Try explosive ammo for that little extra umph. Oh
and don't forget that silencer.

This next bit is what a friend of mine told me about snipers, I can't verify
any of it myself.

The sniper is a person who can conceal him/herself very well and open fire with
speed and accuracy when the target comes into range. Now range for most
sniper rifles will be about 600 m, so ignore the shadowrun range chart as it's
all cocked up anyway. One thing about the sniper is that it's targets don't
even get to hear the shot as the bullet is travelling faster than the speed
of sounds. All anyone hears is little plut sound as the bullet hits it's
target. After a sniper has fired a few rounds they ususally get up and leave
so as to not attract enemy fire to their position. They then begin to fire from
somewhere else.

Why? Snipers no not have to have itchy trigger fingers. They're slow,
pondering, squeezing the round off and then disappearing into the night.

Explosive ammo is bad. It makes a bang. A good sniper can fire, reaim
on a new target, and fire again all before the baddies the target is with
realize the target is dead. Explosive just tips everyone off. Go for
armour piercing.

Give the guy a high reaction/initiative (there are several methods to go
about doing this), a high firearms with a concentration in rifles, a
smartgun installment, cyber-eyes with flare comp, low-light, and vision
magnification, and a Ranger Arms SM-3 with all the goodies and APDS
ammunition (if you can get either one, especially the APDS, that's half
the battle)...or, if your GM's crazy, go for a morph-seeking rifle...

To build a sniper IMHO:
race 0
magic 1
attributes 2 20 points
tech 3 400,000
Skills 4 40 points

I've chosen this arrangement because it allows for purchase of some
rather expensive items including cyberware. If you want higher attribs
make tech 2 and attribs 3. I would still leave Skills at 4.

Personally I might consider building an assassin.
skills firearms, demolitions, projectiles, armed and unarmed combat,
maybe even chemistry for "creative bombings, etc...

Just my opinions folks.

try getting these nifty things

Tactical Computer - says it all - but is way expensive
Muscle Augmentation/Replacements - they help dex + CP, Aug also adds to Reac
Enhance Articulation - +1 reaction, +1 dice to all physical skills
Cerebral Boost - increased int -> Reac + CP increase
Encephalon - same as Cerebral boost - yes you can have both
Suprathyroid - increased dex + reac. Increase food consumption.

IMHO:
keep the stats like everyone else has already posted (and I already deleted
(oops)) also add tactics like land along with a little Military Theory. Can't
hurt and you may be able to pick out a real nice spot to squeeze off a few
rounds along with routes for getting out...

I had a player make a sniper for one of my campaigns. Everything went well
until he got really cocky, figuring he was really hot sh*t). He slipped once
and got treated to the same stuff he dished out.(Shot through a window while he
was on the john!!<Can I dodge?? Yeah, RIGHT!!HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!>)
i don't really think they're a good type of character.

Needs high combat pool.
Smartgun Link
Magnification, probably built into cybereyes with Thermo, Lowlight Etc..
Firearms 6 (That's all you can start with)
-Concentrate in Rifles (Firearms 5, Rifles 7)
Maybe Specialise in an individual rifle type (we have a sniper in our team at
the moment. Combat pool of 9, Walther W2000 8. Rolls 16 dice to hit, with
optical mag 3 in his eyes and a S/G link)

Probably Attributes
Tech
Skills

A'Deus would be the best guy to ask about this area though. He was the GM who
assisted in the creation of the sniper character in our team.

Some ideas for an sniper/assassin could include high firearms no
concentrations or specializations to use many types of guns with equal skill.
Specialize in armed or unarmed. High stealth
skill would be helpful. Cyberware could include retractable spurs, smartgun
link, cyberarms, rangefinder, cybereyes, boosted reflexes, thermographics,
and possibly a tactical computer, this would make you basically RoboCop.
Dikote on any edged weapon also, gas vent and silenecer on all guns.

Actually, I have a sniper for a character. (boy is he NASTY)
But don't go heavy on the smartgun. Smartguns are great for shootouts.
Snipers DON'T (I reapeat DON'T) get involved with shootouts. A sniper
will wait for a target and then shoot at them from a long range with something
like an armor pirceing round. What you NEED is a mag-scope. The best you can
get. And smartguns do not work with mag-scopes. Other than that, make youre
character someone who can blend in and make him/her someone with a cold hart.

About this Sniper, I know this deviates from the general
idea, but how about a physical adept-Sniper. He could get
A specialization in his sniping rifle giving him 8 dice
and another 6 dice from his physical adept abilities.
A grand total of 14 dice without even his combat pool !!!!

He could use the 1st priority for attributes:

Body: 5
Quickness: 6
Strength: 3
Intelligence: 6
Charisma: 4
Willpower: 6

And all the tech he needs (mag, flare comp, link) could be external
like in goggles or something. I dont thing that a sniper needs all
that initiative, after all he depends on the element of surprise
and let us not forget that the first shot is the one that counts.
Well with 14 dice + another 9 dice from his combat pool, that
makes it a total of 23 dice !!!!!!! I dont thing that this guy
can miss.

You could even sacrifice one magic point and get some cyberware
like a smart link and some better eyes or something. That still
leaves you with 22 dice and a target number of 2...
CAN U SCREAM POWERFULL !!!!!!!!!!

Btw, I still think that Wired 3 is a must for the sniper. This allows them
to shoot up to 6 people before the first bullet even hits.

Just as a note, a tactical computer would be useless for a sniper. The range
of a TacComp is that of a shotgun. Anything at the ranges a sniper would be
shooting at would be too far away for the computer to mark.

Smartlinks do not work with any magnification appliances unless both are
resident in the eyes of the sniper.

Scopes do not work w/ smartlink, unless both are resident in the same pair of
goggles and used at the same time.

There is no difference between eltro and optical mag in regards to the above.

If you have newer information I would be interested in seeing it.

Just thought I'd add in a touch of common sense to ruin everyone's day; :-)

A sniper would not necessarily *need* to have *any* kind of increased
reflexes; wired, boosted or otherwise -- for purposes of initiative.
The sniper would effectively be outside of the target's melee/combat
area for purposes of initiative. They sit in their "hide site" (that's
what their position is called), take good aim at the target and fire
when they have a good shot. The only thing the target would get to do
would be to make a body roll. Good luck.

Sniper:
Firearms 6: Rifle (sniper) 8
He can add up to 8 from his combat pool, (rifle is now at 16) he can aim
for up to four rounds(actions), use smartgun link and -mag3, now he's got
a TN of 2 (even with a couple of modifiers, like partial cover).
What more do you need? Just a good Stealth skill, Military Theory
and Firearms B/R, like a few other people have mentioned.

Besides, snipers have a motto: "One shot, one kill."
Snipers do *not* miss. People who think they are snipers miss.

I have never seen an "official" ruling on this one, so if someone has one,
I'd love to hear it.

One school of thought has it that since the description of vision mag systems
in the SSC says "..they work the same as scopes of the same rating..." (or
something like that, don't have my copy handy), and the Black Book says
in the description of imaging scopes "Scopes may not be used with smart-
link systems," then that pretty much precludes using mag-* + smartlink.
On the other hand, another group has it that since both the mag-* and
the smartlink use your eye, it should be possible to use them together.

Eh? Hold on, are the characters working for Tir NaN Og? Is one of them
a follower of Cu Chulain (sp?)? Even so, I doubt they would let a morph
rifle into the hands of a 'runner. And if they didn't get it assigned to
them, it wouldn't work. It would blow up the first time they tried to
pick it up.

A sniper/assassin would not always have a chance to kill a target from afar.
Wired reflexes and smartgun link would be good for those up close situations.
Do not specialize or concentrate in firearms. Predator 2,Remington

In "Point of No Return" what's-her-name wasn't just a sniper, she was an
assassin. A sniper is a very specialized kind of assassin.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I don't know the page number, but it IS in
the black book. If you're playing SRI, I dunno at all.

In addition, not that anyone here will care, but both Tom Dowd and Sam
Lewis have issued corraborating and illuminating statements to further
illustrate this issue.

My previous statements are the paraphrased versions of these statements.

While wired reflexes 3 will make anyone a combat goon I think a sinper would be
better off allocating a higher priority to skills. Giving him the ability to
crack security systems will greatly enhance his market value.

Not to flame you Phil but putting explosive rounds in a silenced weapon is a
classic rookie mistake. APDS is definately the way to go.

If you want to munchkin swap that sniper rifle w/ a medium machinegun and
really rock and roll. The range is just fine and it takes a silencer as well
as a sniper rifle. In the real world it wouldn't be anywhere near as accurate
but who ever said munchkins lived in the real world.

Well I must say that point of no return, although lacking real plot line, is a
realy good example of something that you could do for an interesting
character....npc possibly...have him very mysterious (who isn't in sr?)
and will leave all of a sudden like he was talking to god directly and god said
"do this.."...or maybe just have someone that is programmed although they don't
know it....keywords, cyberphone/radio message, reciever in cybereye that hits
off subliminals (kinda like when the romulans on TNG captured LaForge and had
programmed him but were controling him through narrow band bursts that only his
visor would see and translate subliminally into instructions), or cyber ear for
that matter...you should get the idea....

Big couple of thumbs-up in this corner. ``La Femme Brigitta'' (as a friend
of mine dubbed that attrocious ``American'' version) takes an absolutely
wonderful, suspensful thriller and turns it into just another action-
adventure film. If you liked Brigitta, don't bother with Nikita; you'll
hate it, I can garuntee it. If you didn't like Brigitta, then there's
probably hope for you so see Nikita.

BTW, how many people caught the replay of a scene from Robocop in La Femme
Nikita?

SR2, p. 240, in the paragraph on "Imaging Scopes:"
Scopes may not be used with smartlink systems.

The listing for the magnification implants in SSC says that they work just
like scopes in all ways, but (after much debate here), DLOH was asked about
it and replied that mag implants _are_ compatible with smartgun implants;
the same would presumably be true of external smartgoggles and scopes _if_
both are components of the same device. (If not, the smartlink will provide
inaccurate data (or, at least, it will appear to) because it doesn't know
that a section of your field of vision is being distorted.)

I actually saw that movie first - and I like it better than point of no return.
But PonR had its good points - and I was really happy to see that they didn't
massacre the movie - they just made it have more action for American audiences
and they still kept the unhappy ending (a thing you hardly see in American
movies - especially action ones)

Although the rifle used in Navy Seals is for real, the rest of the sniper
stuff is too Hollywood to give any credence to the ideal.

Something else we've left out of this discussion: snipers almost _always_
work with a partner called a spotter. The spotter is another pair of eyes
as well as a qualified sniper. He also works the radio and has a smaller
weapon, usually an assault rifle or sub-machinegun for close-in problems
that may pop up.

This is a good point. Assuming we want our sniper to be
professionally trained by a corp or gov't and to have somehow broken
away. Assuming also that a sniper and another sniper usually work as a
close team and are together lots... An added roleplaying element is a
buddy with similar skills. This puts pressure on GM to keep track of
another NPC, but. If the sniper is doing what he is trained for w/out a
spotter he'll be uncomfortable, he's used to it. If his buddy left the
old job with him they are a team. Just a thought.

ok I think that in the case of God the rifles effects were a bit unrealistic,
but the Navy SEALs do use the Barret. I saw a run down of SEAL weaponry in a
pop mechanics a year or two back. The Barret was listed as a Equipment: M-82-A1
I think, not sure though...

I also had an idea to kind of eliminate the spotter stuff: Ares Rangefinder.
Yes I did see Sniper, but wouldn't a one man unit w/ rifle and maybe an smg be
a little more concealable/unnoticeable?

Just for shits and giggles, make the ``buddy'' a lover. How about a rivalry
as to who performs which function (``I played spotter last time! It's my

The purpose for the spotter is a little different that than that, I think.
When you're looking through a scope, you have a very narrow field of view. The
spotter helps make up for that. I'm really not sure if Op-3 vision would
make this unnecessary or not, though. It seems like you'd still have a very
small field of view, even with Op-3 instead of a scope.
The spotter also has the function of watching the sniper's back while he's
shooting.

For all of you out there: God's rifle is based on the 20mm rifle that the
Rangers and SF use today. From a friend in Airborne, it can be made accurate
to over 4000 feet through the use of scope adjustments and a very experienced
sniper. It is supposed to be extremely loud, but the round will take a man's
head CLEAN OFF. Not bad from a half mile or so, with excellent accuracy.

The Barret Light 50, also known as the Barret Model 82A1 (or Barret-82) is
a semi-automatic rifle firing the 12.7mm machine gun round. It is intended
for anti-personnel use. The Barret Model 80 (or Barret-80) is a
semi-automatic rifle firing a unique 12.7mm round intended just for it
(standard 12.7mm machine gun rounds will not fit in the chamber, nor will
Barret-80 rounds fit in any other weapon). It is intended for light
anti-armor use.

The Light 50 does /not/ have the power to punch through 2 feet of solid
stone in a single shot; whereas the 80 not only can do so it can punch
through most light armor, and can even damage the tracks of an MBT (though
it cannot penetrate the heavy armor of a tank's body).

Before you flame, check your sources.
