Subject: So how did the first Sr game go? [the review]
Date: Tue Oct 16 08:10:01 2001
Well, in case anyone is interested, I thought I might review the first Sr
game Ive Gm'ed over the tabletop. It happened last weekend, Saturday, and
according to the players I have heard from, it went well. That last
statement may change if I hear back from the ones I havent heard from yet..
but we can always hope, eh? )

I started them off with character creation. Several players (there were 6 in
total) had bought the main book and had ideas of what they wanted to play.
They were the fastest to create characters. this didnt always move smoothly,
but on the whole there were no major drama's. The player who wanted to
min/max everything found out the hard way that with only 123 points, (using
the point creation system from SR3Comp), that the points run out pretty
fast. He ended up with a face/adept without very many skills, but pretty ok
all up. There are two mages, one an aspected hermetic sorcerer, the other a
full shaman. There is a decker/techie combat dwarf, an ork driver/mechanic
(think charles bronson meets 'the bandit') and an all rounder whose use of
skillwires seems destined to foil my best laid plans and cause me all sorts
of brainpain ( :) ).

The game is the second adventure from "first run". For those who dont know
it, I wont spoil it here, but for those who do know it, the characters had a
ball meeting the johnson. The first part of the mission where there is no
opposition was the funniest thing I have ever witnessed. These players who
normally are so staid when playing Dnd, had finally realised how mortal an
SR character is. The absence of any opposition was making them all paranoid.
They all jumped into panic mode when the climactic part of the scene
occured. It was joyous. Ok, Im not an evil Gm, but that really made me
smile. They were even playing in character too!

The team went to the stuffer shack, and gave me the opportunity to run the
food fight segment. This is as the name suggests a big fight in a stuffer
shack. No real spoilers possible here. They didnt realise they were to be
ambushed and only two guys went in. the surprise is when (playing in
character) the team not only managed to foil the opponents, kill almost all
the armed opposition but also rob the store blind in the process. They are
driving away and they even thought of whether the place had any camera's.
The resident "mr.photographic memory" hadnt seen any camera's, so the shaman
went back in astral to check - then the decker wiped the camera's from the
matrix. I was really impressed. These guys were really learning (and it
wasnt the other SR player in the team who suggested it either). They werent
in Forgotten Realms anymore Toto!

Ok, you can stop reading this now if youre getting bored. Im just posting
this because I am so proud of these players.

The "Big Fight" (tm) occured as the next major step along. This took ages. I
really hadnt been the best GM on the night. Id forgotten things, been not as
prepped as I needed to be. Id misruled and misunderstood the way combat
worked. These all arent great things. But I was learning and I will keep on
learning. its a hard thing to be GM. I hope the next session goes better
than the last one. Im expecting a few players to want to change their
characters somewhat, as a few guys were annoyed they only got one action
percombat round rather than 2 or 3 as the faster ones occasionally pulled
off. I wil have a little chat to them about what they want to achieve for
their characters, and that they were focusing their characters on other
things than combat. I hope they remember that, as I feel that a lot of them
want to be combat oriented now. Oh well. we all live and learn.

Hope someone else gets something from the encouragement contained in the
above. Thanks to all who have and are and will keep up the help and
encouragement to GM Shadowrun.

Cheers,
GreyWolf
