Although I love the idea of a moon base and I originally (long ago) suggested
the idea I've thought why such an idea may not be pratical.

Money. There has to be money to be made from the corps going to the moon. Now
while they wouldn't have to worry about things such as ecological disasters
mining would be prohibitively expensive. Why ? Well I rememebered the words
of a geologist I once knew, he said mining would be pointless on the moon unless
there had been running water for the last thousands of years. It was running
water he said that is responsible for veins of minerals etc and the build up
of metals in one particular location. Without this build up the minerals are
too widely spread making mining impractical.

P.S. I still love the idea od a moon base though.

Phill.

There are still good reasons for a moonbase in SR, and to a lesser extent
they apply to orbital stations as well.

Since there's no magic past the atmospheric barrier, there's no astral spies
or leaks, no ritual magic against your researchers and execs ("Mister
Johnson has left the building"), no spirits/elementals, few (if any)
paranormal critters, etc. All of which means no interruptions in whatever
secret activities you've got going on up there.

There aren't a lot of vehicles capable of a lunar trip, and the passengers
and cargo will be tightly screened, which means that you won't have many
defections, 'cause it's a long way home. You won't have many extraction
teams, either. Every bit of weight going to/from has to be accounted for in
fuel consumption. If you're in space and unexpectedly short on fuel,
stowaways are probably the first thing to go out the airlock, if there's any
room for stowaways to begin with. Saboteurs who manage to get there will not
have access to all the fancy gadgets they could lug around on Earth.

Legal issues over the environment aren't much of a problem on Earth anymore,
but they don't matter much to the space bases. What does it matter if you
launch a few hundred tons of nuclear waste towards the sun? For that matter,
who's ever going to know, much less care, about all those drums of
ToxiGoo(tm) you've got buried under the lunar dust?

Lastly, the comm delay between the Earth and Moon would be sufficient to
ensure that no decker will be able to loiter in your system... by the time
he registers detection of the ice, it's already got him. Route your trace
data to your Project Thor satellite, and that decker is a piece of forgotten
history.

Just one thing to remember if runners do go up into the black vacumn:

"In space, no one can hear you scream."

Hopefully, none of the GM's out there are cruel enough to put their PCs up
against one of those acid spraying monstrosities - but then again...

Space is big!!!
Concerning the flame on the Zurich orbital after
consulting corperate shadowfiles we found that there are two
other stations up as well as the orbital( Deaduls [the big
one] and appolo which is a space platform), bouth are owned by
Ares and one is quoted as being very big, also did anyone catch
the quote abought magic working differntly in the same section ,
some one does mention that it works but in a way that ground
mages dont expect / understand.

There are also mentions of other corporations having orbital
platforms scattered out in various books. As to how magic works
"out-there" that is an open guess till FASA gets some more things out.
