I thought about working up an NPC using this system. Could be unique.

Ever read any Neitzsche? If you stare into the void long enough, the void
stares back. Or rather, what's in the void stares back. WHich is what
freaks out most mages, and why your character ends up in a rubber room if
he blows the roll. There's Horrors out there in the void, waiting for the
mana field to rise sufficiently on Earth that they can make a landing.
THink of the mana field as water, and the border between the Gaiasphere and
the void as a canal lock. The water level inside is too low right now for
the gates to open, but a clever person could portage their boat around the
lock if it's small enough.

That's basically what you're doing when you initiate in the Void. Oh, did I
mention that the final initiation has to be done IN SPACE? That's really
important. You go out there and you do an initiation and you either learn
how to portage your boat around the locks or you fall in and drown.

And you don't have to use a Golden Dawn/Tree of Life system. THat was what
Paul was most familiar with to use as an analogy. He said that any system
would do, as long as it was quantized discretely and worked toward the same
basic goal, that of abandoning a fixed mindset. A Child of the Abyss uses
worldviews the way the rest of us use tools. They pick up and discard
belief systems as befits their goals of the moment. So a SHaman couldn't do
this, only a Mage. Shamans are restricted to their totem. Mages don't have
totems, and thus can change belief systems without fragging up their magic.
And you have to initiate to at least 12th rank before you can even think
about doing this thing. This is what I remember of the conversation. I have
it on diskette, but have no idea which of my 27 diskettes of GEnie
transcripts it's on. I may eventually get around to finding the original
conversation, but don't count on it.
