Ok, that's it... This Owl that sent the "Is your website a secret?" SPAM
has hit ShadowRn, ShadowTk, and NERPS now... I say we hit 'em and hit 'em
hard...

I'm contracting a hit on this corp. pay is 50, ooo Nuyen... I need one
really good decker to dig up some info on this corp and run Matrix cover...
I also want to get at least one good Rigger, two sammies, and at least one,
maybe two or three magical types...

Anyone interested in killing the spammers contact Bull at LTG 342-981-9826...

<grin>

Seriously... What the frag is up with the spammers all of a sudden?

I thought that the list had a filter on it? I'd like to see incoming
messages only echoed if they come from the appropriate domain name (like
umd.edu for me) and have the appropriate 'From:' field in them.

Then this spam shit would be eliminated, or we'd know who was
responsible.

Well, unless it was forged. Damn, must we *all* use PGP-signing?!?

It doesn't work like that, fortunately...
If it did, then, unless you had a database of every single correct domain
name, people would be locked out....
That does happen with the filter is, it blocks posts from anyone who isn't
currently subscribed....

Anyone can subscribe, but then, in order for the subscription to go through
it must be sent from a site capable of receiving mail, 'cos the listserver
asks for confermation by reply e-mail...

If it doesn't get it within a set time, the subscription gets cancelled...

It normally works. As someone said, this is the first time in 3 years that
the lists have been hit by SPAM....

| Then this spam shit would be eliminated, or we'd know who was

The "people" responsible WILL be in the listservers log of subscriptions and
unsubscriptions.... Otherwise, it's never have made it to the list...

How would that stop SPAM?

It would stop anonymous SPAM, as well as forged SPAM.

A digital signature with enough bits would give us an assurance that a
message actually *did* come from the person in the 'from' field.

So,
If an entry had a 'from' value which didn't show up in the Subscribed
list, ditch it.
If the electronic signature didn't match, ditch the e-mail.

Now we know that anything that goes through is actually from the person
listed.

Of course, there aren't necessarily people who know how to digitally
sign their posts. *sigh*

I always thought you could only post to the list if you were subscribed
to it. That means Owl was subscribed to the list for at least a while...
Anyway of course this happens when Mark is away for the weekend, like
just about everything weird with the list :)
