During character generation? You pay X points for the skill, and decide
to Concentrate. The rating then becomes X+1 without you having to pay
extra points.

For example, buy Firearms at 4, and then concentrate in Pistols, you get
Firearms (Pistols) at 5, but all other concentrations of Firearms at 3.

AND...if you are speaking of once you have begun playing the character,
then you handle it like this:

If you have a Firearms skill of 4 (for example) with no concentrations
or specializations, you could do one of the following: you could
concentrate in Pistols (for example) and it would cost you 5 (desired
level of concentration) X 1.5 (cost of concentrations) = 8 (you have to
round up) karma points to have a Firearms general skill of 4 and a
Pistols concentration of 5. Keep in mind that with a general skill of
4, you already have an *effective* rating of 4 in the concentration you
are creating (Pistols in this case), so you are raising from 4 to 5.

You can also specialize without concentrating.

Take our above example. You have a Pistols skill of 4 with no
concentrations or specializations. Now let's say you want to specialize
in the marvelous Savalette Guardian of yours (heh heh). You pay 1 (cost
of specializations) X 5 (desired level of specialization) = 5 karma
points to have a general Firearms skill of 4 and a specialization of 5
with Savalette Guardians. Thus, if you are using your Firearms skill
with anything other than a Savalette Guardian, you use your general
skill rating of 4.

Hope that helps.
