This is what I came up with as version 2.0 of the (joke) Speed Samuai...
Basically, his Reaction is 5 points higher than in the previous version,
necessitating some changes in equipment to get the money for it...

ELVEN SPEED SAMURAI 2.0

Commentary: The Elven Speed Samurai has taken advantage of some recent
developments in the field of cybernetics to reduce his reaction time even
further. He leaves mere mortals far behind with no hope of ever catching up
with his tremendous speed.

I'm assuming that this is going to make a homepage somewhere, so I'm
going to be picky.

Recalculated average running speed, including athletics succeses;

-Althletics success test(TN4), 4 successes, average effective quickness
-Runs one action per turn (16x3 meters)
-Moves three remaining actions (3x16 meters)

Equals 96 meters per combat turn, or 115.2 kph (on average!!)

He can run after (and catch) a Dodge Scoot or Jackrabbit.

> Combat: 7

Being picky again, (12+8+3)/2 = 12.5

> Ares High-Velocity Assault Rifle with Laser Sight and (4)

Sure it's fast enough for him?

> BMW Blitzen 2050

This sure ain't *grin*

As an aside, does anyone want to speculate on the oxygen debt his body
would have to pay after he ran for a combat turn?? Think of how an
olympic sprinter looks after running 100m and multiply the effect by
about 16. Heart failure, anyone?

Like to see him stop in a hurry, too..... The only man known to pulp
himself by running into a wall.

Gurth once dared to write,

The Reaction Enhancer seems too powerful this way. After I reread
the rules for it I wondered if they possibly meant the +6 was with
cyberware and not additional to. After all they didn't say the Reaction
Enhancer had a rating limit of 6 but max value of +6. House rule
interpretation here is that the max value is with cyberware. Has anybody
heard a clarification from FASA on this?

heck, now that you redid the Speed Samuri, why don't you try to redo Mr.
Indestructible, with Bio. I would certainly like to see that little
munchkin get bigger. In fact, I even use him whenver I want to teach the
characters than they can't keep going around shooting down Lonestar
officers. They have family and friends that like to get revenge too!

Just a moment.... Wired reflexes 3: Essence: 5
Reaction enhancer 5: Essence: 1,5

Essence cost: 6.5

Did I miss something or is some Essence-cost reducing measure I dont
know in use? (or, maybe, did somebody make a mistake? :)

Cybertechnology isn't too clear on this, however the Cyber Runner (page
87) has Wired Refs 2 and Reaction Enhancer 4, plus Enhanced Articulation.
This brings his Reaction to 4(13).

From that, I'd say it simply adds its rating to your Reaction.

Couldn't do that... IIRC Mr. Indestructible Dude was Jani's creation for
his munchkin competition with TopCat and Damion.

My way of saying that it's bad for their health to shoot lots of cops is
by helping them figure out how much damage 20 or so cops with heavy
pistols can do before the PCs gun them all down.
It usually turns out that no matter how fast you are, you can't kill them
fast enough to make a difference to the outcome :)

Of course, now that one of the characters is an undercover cop (and all
the other player knows is that he (the other player) sometimes gets asked
to leave the room for a few minutes ;) I won't have that problem. I hope.

Shit... I read the wrong line, the Reflex Trigger is .2 Essence, the
Reaction Enhancer is .3. Okay, now with all these flaws pointed out (I
really should take a little more time to do this kind of munchkinism :)
I'll make some slight adjustments and post again...

Hmm... I rolled for that, I got four actions (initiative 37) and 5
successes for his Athletics test. I must have miscalculated something...
17 x6 = 102 m/turn. BTW, I took a turn to be four seconds, because of his
high initiative and because FoF indicates a turn is between 3 and 5
seconds. 102/4*3.6 = 91.8 km/h. If you take a three-second turn, you get
122.4 km/h.

Yep :)

I know where that came from -- I somehow divide by 3 instead of 2. I
thought it was too low... Shows you shouldn't try to revise an archetype
in a hurry :/

"High-Velocity" in the name :)

I think I'd like to play (not GM) a game someday where all the characters
are diferent kinds of munchkin(ish) archetypes: Speed Samurai, Mr.
Indestructible, some super mage, and so on.

To be honest I only noticed this when you brought it up, and went looking
through the characters to see if any had a Reaction Enhancer. Without
that, it could be interpreted either way (like a lot of other FASA
rules...).

Bioware isn't mentioned in this, and neither does Shadowtech give any
ruling here. The skill is perfectly legal, if you accept that bioware can
increase a skill above 6.

I spent 6 points on Athletics skill, then took a specialization in Running
-- allowed per SRII Skills chapter, as you quote -- so that makes it 8.
Then his enhanced articulation bioware adds +1 to Athletics, bringing his
specialization up to 9.

Ah. Never noticed you were calculating Enhanced Articulation into it
directly... Hm.
Atletics: 4 (5)
Athletics (Running(Running)): 8 (9)

As Enh.Art. doesn't raise the skill, just adds one die to it, I agree
with you it is absolutly possible to go this way. *sigh* should have
looked at everything before going after that... :-/

Well, I don't think anyone uses the rule with Essence-cost reduction
though surgery ...
But anyway, the target number for the surgery test would be extemely
high... about 10, I guess.
So you need more than 100 dice for an average of 10 successes.

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
