No a magician _cannot_ chose his victims when he casts an area effect spell.
The spell will get _everyone_ who is in the area of effect who the caster
can see. Also note that a mage cannot allocate spell defence dice to his
friends to protect against a spell he cast.

Yes. They get _everyone_ in their area of effect, regardless of whether the
magician can see them or not. Think magical grenade.

Well, the book doesn't actually say if it gets the caster or not, but
somewhere (I'll look it up if neccessary) it says that magicians can cast
touch spells on themselves automatically. Using a bit of deductive logic on
this, we can assume therefore that the caster knows his or her own aura
pretty imtimately, and so they either "see" their aura all the time, or they
do not need to see their own aura to effect themselves. Couple this with the
"effects all targets in the area" bit about area effect spells, and they
mage will zap himself with the manaball too.
