Perhaps I can be of some assistance here (I've always wanted to say that :)
The spider totem is listed as legal PC totem (at gamemaster's discretion) on
page 144 of Bug City and again on page 155 of Awakenings. So far as I am aware
there is no reference to the Spider totem in the Grimoire. I can check my
other source books (I have a complete collection) if you want, but I don't
remember it being listed anywhere else (except maybe for the UB
sourcebook/adventure, but I didn't see one when I flipped through it just
now.).
On a personal note, I kind of like the spider totem.

Ok, that's where it was... I coudve sworn it was in teh Grimmy, but then,
it's been awhile since I read through that book...

Oh well... And Spider is available at GM's discretion. Ok, I knew it was a
normal, valid totem...

I stand correct and humbled...:):)

Or not...

It could be interesting, but have you seen how it was applied in the third
(i think) Secrets of Power trilogy?? Wow... I read that long before I
encountered any bugs, and the first time I met a fleshform bug, I thought it
was connected to a Spider Shaman...

Way too buggy for my taste...

Or just as bad, remember the adventure Total Eclipse. There was a rather
nasty spider shaman in that one, plus a really nasty free spirit/possible
Horror. In general though, the spider totem presented in Bug City wasn't
"buggy" at all. It described spider as having "...many aspects, from
creator
to destroyer to trickster. She is whispering death, she is the brilliance of a
new dawn reflected through the dew on her web. She waits and she plots,
carefully and deliberately. Her web is intricate and delicate, yet sturdy, and
she strikes quickly and without remores." Sounds rather Machivellian to me, and
I always liked him (and in fact I own a copy of "The Prince" :). Too bad I
never play shaman.
