Umm, you are thinking of bacteriarhodopsin. It is a protein, you don't
necessarily need the bacteria to use it. It is being used NOW for research
purposes (the Aurora spyplane is asserted to use bacteriarhodopsin-based
memory units since damage to the unit makes the data unrecoverable by any
known means). I'd dispute its any more "alive" then any other organic
protein or polymer. Otherwise you'd have kevlar spirits and oil spirits (not
toxic).

I can't stand stilted portrayals of AIs. Deus is *nothing new* in the
cyberpunk genre. Personally I would have liked to see something actually
alien to Shadowrun, not yet another <yawn> mad AI. If I ever run Renraku
Shutdown I'll make Deus something a bit more original - like the Other from
Tad Williams Otherland :) heheh muhahahah <cackles fade into the darkness>

I don't think so. If you want to follow that line of reasoning I HIGHLY
recommend you pick up White Wolfs "Digital Web 2nd Edition" for spirits in
the net and how magic could be equated with cyberdecks. Don't get the first
edition though..yuck.
