Subject: SR2 PBeM Invitation (longish)

Hello everybody,
I've looked around for any SR PBeMs and it seems that either
there aren't too many or the SR PBeMs in progress aren't
accepting new players.

Well, I've had it. I am planning to setup my own SR PBeM.
Although I would rather play than GM it seems that I'm
left with no choice.

IMHO, I am a fairly experienced GM. I've played and
GMed several RPGS for several years now and I am quite confident
in my GMing skills. However as I'm not a PBeM game veteran and
I'm somewhat apprehensive if I could pull this off. However,
I am willing to try my hand at it.

I am still trying to determine the feasibility of such
a game and I'm also still in the process of setting up the
details of the campaign and I would appreciate your input.
I have a few questions for those interested and I also am
asking for suggestions on how to pull this caper (especially
among those who have experience in PBeM games) Any input is
welcome. My e-mail address: valera@***************.com

*Do I need FASA's permission?

A few questions for those interested:
*How much experience do you have with roleplaying (specifically SR)?
*What sort of character are you inclined to play?
*What are your expectations?
*How often can you "play"? Every 3 days (or twice a week)? Weekly?

Tentative Details:
1. I don't have the Seattle Sourcebook :(
And so I don't think I would be able to do justice to a game
set in Seattle. I have the (outdated? out of print?) Neo-A's
Guide to North Am, some participants might not be
comfortable with this. Alternatively, I'll probably be setting
the campaign in two "fictional" (hah!) cities of my own creation
(sort of).
a. A city somewhere in South East Asia (a corporate haven)
b. A city set in the NorthEast
Any objections? Suggestions? Violent reactions?
2. I have a collection of SR sourcebooks but I don't have some
books like the FoF sourcebook. (The books I DO have include
the Grimmy, ShadowTech, CorpShadow Files, The NAGNA, NAGRL).
3. I'll be using the "normal" character creation rules (including
the more metas and allergy options). With RE to gear I'll
probably limit the tech to whats in the Street Sam guide
and the SR2 rulebook. If you want anything in the other sourcebooks
we will have to sort it out (give me several really, really good
reasons why). I doubt I'll let you have anything with avail>6,
but we can still work it out. RE spells: You'ld have to check
these out with me.
4. If it ever does boil down to a combat (I hope not!) situation
the updates/"turns" will be actually a series of the combat
turns/phases.
5. Until September, there will be 2 turns a week (possibly
more, my work/schedule permitting). One will be sent out
on Sunday Evening/Early Monday Morning EST and another by
Wednesday Evening/Early Thursday Morning EST.
However, I check my e-mail daily and I will be able to
accomodate any questions and clarifications.
6. If there are no serious objections, the GM will make the
dice rolls. Alternatively we could use an e-mail dice
rolling service although this will likely cause significant
delays in the progress of the game.
7. Like any other campaign, although most of the material
and trappings of this World will be based in the SR universe
it is nevertheless a unique creation. The campaign
will be set in the early '50s, before bioware becomes
"widely available". Chicago won't necessarily be a hotbed
of bug activity...or maybe it will. Who knows?

It's not difficult, just make most of the stuff up on the spot (oops, did
that give away my secret? :) You've got lots more time to think about things
than when you're GMing in real life. At least, if you intend to do a PBEM
campaign, and not a PBIRC one.

Don't make too much up beforehand is I think the best advice I can give you.
Just have a few ideas floating inside your head, and dump them onto the
players when you think the time is right. Then see how they react, and
adjust your plans accordingly. Make up NPC stats when you need them, if at
all. If you feel real generous, roll dice to see what happens *grin*
otherwise just look at the PC's skill and say "yeah, that'll work" or "I
don't think you can pull that off" or things like that. Improvise is the
word du jour here, I think :)

FUCK THAT!

Sorry, but these sort of questions piss me off. If you want to play
Shadowrun or any other RPG by email, GO AHEAD AND DO IT, and DON'T worry
about shit like that. I run an SR PBEM and have totally never thought of
copyright nonsense.

Anyway, since you asked, I'd say playing a game does not violate anybody's
copyright -- hell, if that were the case why would they bother bringing out
the game at all?

Seems to me that the only legit case that any gaming company Could Have
is if copious tables and stats that would otherwise only be in published
material were spewed forth in the PBEM game.
The only company that works in a fashion other than this is that obnoxious
one that works out of Wisconsin. ;)

They don't bother anyone except whoever plays their games though. In other
words, they don't bother anyone at all. ;-)
