I once deliberatedly included such a character in my playing group, to get
them to roleplay better, as they were ignoring too many things just because
of the "hey, he's a PC", argument. The character was a magically active
character who had to infiltrate the group and help them find out about
something [a long story]. He ultimatelly made off with the item needed to
complete the adventure. I gave him no special info and gave him no special
powers, for completing his mission he got a *lot* of things but he of course
had to retire the character. This had the desired effect, my players now
don't allow new characters to just enter their team without passing some
rather severe tests and being properly screened and are a bit more
suspicious. They also want to make a run to get back at the character that
got to them so severely [that "run" took more than 50 sessions to finish], to
which the player playing the former "traitor" doesn't mind. [they have been
until now otherwise occuppied though, as this would take planning as the
defences of that pc are made by a PLAYER and they are REALLY not as forgiving
as GM made ones, they are meant to KILL interlopers without giving any kind
of chance]

Point is: It enhanced the campaign, and did not generate any bad blood
between the PLAYERS [the CHARACTERS, however eat each other's hearts] so IF
done properly it's ok. The players also considered it a neat idea after they
got over the original shock.
