Well, I guess that depends on how truly offensive the smell is, but probably
pretty cheap... <grin>

By the way, I played once with a guy playing an organ legger (sells "black
market" organs and body parts). He was a dwarf with a mild allergy to
water! Needless to say, he also had this power for free...;)

A mild allergy to water would give him an automatic +1 to all TNs *all the
time*!

Yep, I think this one fits the subject line perfectly :)

Why? Sure, if he's in Seattle, he'll be getting rained on all the time, but
he was based in Cleveland.

>Yep, I think this one fits the subject line perfectly :)

Oh yeah! :-)
This was one of my little brother's characters. He has a penchant for making
real oddballs.
Ask me about his rat catcher/slaver/poacher he ran one time in another game

I think he might be refering to the large amount of water present in the
human body.

Well sure, but very little of that is actually in pure water form, right?

Most of that is in a solution of some sort.

Besides, we ruled that it was mainly a topical, or ingested allergy. So no
bathing or drinking unless it was totally synthetic.
He wore a lot of colonge, and used "Shower in a Can" a lot!

With something like 70% (I think) of the human body consisting of water,
he'd be allergic to himself. Large, transparent, flying discs anyone? :)

A water molecule is a water molecule, I'd say. Not that I'd let characters
have allergic reactions from a single molecule, but something with a high
water content (whether there's lots of stuff dissolved in it or not) would
trigger the allergy in my game. If you're looking for pure water, about
the only place you'll find something that comes close, is in a laboratory.

Synthetic water? Or do you mean synthetic drinks? Most of them contain
water as well, if you ask me -- after all it's a very easy to come by
resource. On top of that, no water = you die.

All in all, I think it's a very silly idea, giving a character a water
allergy.

Although I have to agree, I just imagined a workaround: Make it psychological.
And let the GM decide when the allergy effects start.

We ruled that only a high conecntration of free water would induce the
allergic reaction.

Synthetic drinks actually. By 2057 there has got to be something he can
drink that isn't made with water. Probably along the lines of Paranoia's
Bouncy Bubble Beverage.
I further decided that the stuff tasted terrible, and was most likely
carcinogenic!

>All in all, I think it's a very silly idea, giving a character a water

Well . . .DUH! :-)
Of course it's silly. He's a silly character, being played by a silly player.
When you get right down to it though, which is really sillier?
A water allergy, or a sunlight allergy?
I'd say that's about the same level of silliness. Only thing is one's been
published in "Official" SR materials.
The allergy system is based on myths anyway, and there were planty of
critters in mythology who hated water as much as they hated sunlight!
Plus, keep in mind that it was just a mild allergy. We decided that he
could, and did occaisonally have to drink water, he just became quite sick
from it.
He could take a shower too, he just came out looking sunburned afterwards. :-)

Actually I liked how they explained the sunlight allergy in 1st edition,
based off x-rays and such. Which also gave modifiers to medical healing
that they then left out of 2nd edition (and I've added back in). My
opinion is a water allergy is still silly, maybe I'd by an allergy to a
substance in the water: chlorine, flouride, lead...but an allergy to the
chemical bonding of H2O is just silly. :o)

Agreed, Loki, it's very silly. I had a thought, however, that could explain
it...:)

Maybe his allerggy is simply psychosomatic... He doesn't realize his body
is made of water (after all, if I recall, the dwarf had an intelligence of
2, maybe...). If you could ever convince him it IS made up of water, then
he'd be in serious pain for a long time (ie, constantly), or he'd learn to
beat the psycho whatchits and no longer be allergic.

Well, that's just my rambling idiocy, hope it made sense...:)

I have to argue about this, I just _have_ to :) Sunlight allergies I can
buy, not because they're official or anything, but because many people
nowadays get sunburned a lot easier and/or faster than others. You could
just say that an allergy for sunlight is just a more severe (magic-
induced) form of that, but an allergy to water is something that seems
very weird for a living creature -- never mind myths, lots of what they
say isn't true simply because the truth couldn't be discovered at the
time they were first thought up.
