No, I believe that roll is made to determine if regeneration kicks in
or not.

Thats not how it reads. Like I said I think its a hold over from 1st Ed
where there was no overflow.

So how about moving the roll to when the PC is at full overflow damage?
That takes care of all the problems I see with the rule as I understand
it stands now, because you once again roll at the moment the character
would normally have died.

That is the most reasonable way to treat it, though. At least, that's
what I do. If the Regenerating Character takes a Deadly Wound and rolls
a 6, then the damage does not heal, and the character is Dying according to
the normal rules (ie. taking one over-damage point every ten minutes, when
the character runs out of over-damage boxes, he is irrevocably Dead). This
simply reflects a nasty wound that overwhelms his Regeneration ability.
Of course, another member of the party can Stabilize the poor sod, as per
usual, and Heal or Treat the wound. As soon as the Regenerating
Character's damage drops below Deadly, the Regeneration kicks back in and
takes care of the rest.
