Perhaps making him a free spirit of some sort would work better?
That way, he does need the invisibility spell ("he just faeded away from
sight!") and you wouldn't have to sweat over drain for those nasty spells.
I'm not sure of a background, but perhaps he used to be a Mage Detective's ally
who was brutally killed by some bad guys.
