I have always played in the game here that when resisting said magic, the -2
dice comes into play. Unlike the advancements of initiation, I usually didn't
increase this at the same time, but I have heard of examples from players that
did. So if a Mind Probe (in the case of Detection) were utilized at a guy
with a -2 dice towards Detection, s/he would have 2 fewer dice (minimum of one
die, plus whatever s/he may buy with Karma) to resist with.

All IMO.

Argh! Shamans are more vulnerable than mundanes?!? Please take those
modifiers from spell defence if you simply must but not from the standard
resistance test.

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.

Okay here's the deal for those of you who actually bother to read the
rules. In Second Edition,
ANY bonuses or penalties to a shamanic character's sorcery abilities are
applied ONLY to the
magic pool. This means that for purposes of spellcasting the
aforementioned dog shaman
(or whatever) with a -2 dice to whatever category will have two fewer dice
in his magic pool
when it comes to casting, defending, or otherwise manipulating those types
of spells.
If a character has two or less dice in his magic pool and someone hurls
that particular category
of spell at him - he does not have any magic pool (for purposes of
resisting that spell anyway) to
defend.

Only certain Shaman's, and also note that this is only for resisting spells of
this kind. And, as I said previously, it's "how I have done things", not a
game rule by any real measure.
