Subject: SR3 GM Screen Info?
Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 09:50:01 -0400
Seeing as I got SO much info on the SR3 book before it came in, I was
wondering what's going to be in the other books. I've heard lot's of
speculations about the bigger ones MitS, CC, and MaM...but it's too early
to get detailed info on these books.
Since the GM Screen is geared to come out soon (anyone heard an estimated
date?), I was wondering what's going to be in it.
The old GM screen came with the Contacts book. I know that this one is
suppose to come out with Critters, but is that it?

Well, they said September at Gencon..

It's a 48 page book with all the critters published in SR so far, "Except
for the lame ones" (Is that an exact quote?:)

Ok, votes for the "lamest critter" in Shadowrun!
I vote for the century ferret. I've never found a really good
reason to ever use this critter.

We had century ferrets like the Earthdawn tourney at GenCon had raccoons.
Why? we dutifully asked our GM. Why were we seeing this same critter over
and over and over again? "They're cute," she dutifully replied as we hurled
dice at her.

My vote for the lamest critter is the greater armadillo, though now that I'm
building up the Texas campaign I might actually have a few walking around,
being generally stupid.

And more contacts, AFAIK. According to the 1998 FASA catalog, it has
"information for the gamemaster: new creatures and creature powers, new
contacts and information on movers and shakers in the Shadowrun world."
However, this is the same catalog that says Target: Smuggler Havens has
ship construction rules... :)

Yes, that's exactly what I remember FASAMike saying... Expect about 10 or
12 critters to be deleted from the ones in the two existing Paranormal
Animal books, going by the SR Q&A seminar at GenCon. Among these are,
IIRC, the bombardier and the hoop snake.

I did -- it came running out of a forest during Harlequin's Back when the
PCs were hunting for food using bows and swords. One of the players ad
just decided it would be more efficient to catch the next animal in his
bare hands, so he grabbed hold of the century ferret and strangled it,
rather than try and hit it with his sword :)

Apart from that, they might make good pets, I don't know...

I've used greater armadillo's though. They make great attack
critters in low-ceiling areas (like, drainage culverts) and when I've done
the Devil Rats thing to death.

So, I'll look forward to the Creatures...and mightly loosly expect more.
Thanks.
BTW, creature powers...I was surprised to see that Flame Projection is not
in SR3. Fire Elementals and Dragons can't do that any more? Seems
surprising.

We actually had one in game (or maybe it was a quicksilver mongoose)-
we had a rigger who also had Panormal Animal Training as a skill- he owned
two hellhounds and a ferret. (GM winged the cost, the player was a newby,
so DON'T ask how to do it)
The ferret got used a a "carrier pigion" in the Double Exposure
modual. The ferret died. HMM, maybe it is kinda lame.

Ah...that makes some sense. I wasn't looking at the book when I wrote it
and I didn't remember seeing anything "wrong" with the Fire Elementals. It
was just when late last night I was trying to convert a run into SR3, that
I was looking up Flame Projection because of a dragon and didn't see it
listed.
Thanks though.

Now, the bombardier I could understand dropping (I mean, apart from being
Rocky on steroids, it isn't really dangerous anyway) but c'mon, the hoop
snake is a fun concept - hell, I'm fairly sure it even ties in with the
local legends.

They've replaced it by the power Innate Spell (Flamethrower), as you can
see in the description for the fire elemental on page 266 and the generic
dragon description on page 268. This does seem an easier way of doing it,
because in the game world the spell and the critter power had much the
same effect, but they had separate rules behind the scenes.

Anyone has proposed changes on how innate spell abilities work, or
are they described in the SR3 book as well? I was putting together a
physad with the innate spell ability to Heal, but then I realized that the
description in SRComp says the spell has a force equal to the magic
attribute of the individual - 1. That's all fine and dandy but how many
dice are you supposed to roll (since you don't roll Force dice in SR3).
My idea was just to use his Magic Rating as the skill rating but I wanted
to hear if any of you had already come up with a better method.

Actually the magical abilities in the Shadowrun companion were designed to
create a new form of magical adept, one with very focused abilities and not to
give those who already have magical abilities more of them.

The editing job hacked the rules to pieces, but that's FASA for you.

The full version of the rules can be found at

http://www.arc.unm.edu/~james/skenson/magic_edges.html

and most likely at Kenson's home page located at

http://members.aol.com/talonmail/

Enjoy!

If you want to treat that ability as a critter ability, that'd work. If
not, then buying that edge would, IMO, make the char eligible to learn
Sorcery.

Actually no, I was letting you know how the powers/rules are supposed to work
so that down the road your GM does not surprise you with it.

However, utilzing the ability in that way could make for some intreasting
characters. Imagine an adept that could turn invisible, or one with a fire
ball spell.
