Subject: SR3 ... How compatible is it?

Hi! I don't have a copy of SR3 yet, but I hope it will be here soon, but
I'd like to ask a question. How compatible is SR3 and the products for SR2
and SR1? I'm currently teaching a group of new (SR terms) players who've
only been playing GURPS for the past 4 or so years. I've got a pretty
complete set of old modules (DNA/DOA onwards to Paradise Lost) and
sourcebooks (up to the Underworld sourcebook). I would really hate to have
to replace everything ... again.

It's 99.9% compatible.
IMO all you might need to do is adjust a few initiative ratings in the old
modules.
Add some skills here and there and voila, you're all set.
Aside from character creation, spellcasting and the initiative system, very
little was changed.
And those changes that were made are very simple to adjust to.
I was in the same boat as you, and I haven't needed to replace anything.

Here's the major changes.

SR1 to SR2 and SR3: Change the damage codes on weapons per BBB2 (it's
a shame BBB3 didn't include the formula for this). Update matrix
schematics from the SR1 map style to the SR2/3 Host style (see VR2
and/or BBB3). Then there's lots of little stuff.

From SR2 to SR3: Stats and numbers don't change much on the player
side. PC mages with lots of combat spells will have to update their
spell list (SR3 combat spells have variable damage codes). Most of the
changes (and there really weren't that many) were to how things are
done. For example, the turn sequence during combat has changed. But
that's pretty much cosmetic. The only really big adjustement you have
to make for SR2 adventures is to update any matrix maps to the Host
style of SR3, which isn't to hard. If you have VR2 then you probably
allready know how to do this.

IMHO all the changes were good (after factoring the errata :) and the
BBB3 is a good investment.

I think if you go out and buy a SR3, especially from a large chain
store, (Tower picked it up, I think) its gonna be a second or third
printing. That means that all the errata changes have already been made
to the text, and you need not worry about them. Anybody got one of these
yet?

I thought that the only difference between 1st and 2nd was the price,
and that 3rd included the errata? Not *all* the errata, I'm sure, just
the ones they've found so far... :-)

Editions. Not printings, Editions. :)

You're thinking of the different printings of the third edition.

No, the original query I made was in reference to different PRINTINGS of
SR3- supposedly, the errata have been incorporated into the body of the
later printings, as a unadvertised "revised" printing. Anybody seen one
that's not print 1 or 2?

SR3 has the same basic rules as SR2, especially the combat system. Most
magic stuff (Grimoire, Awakenings) can be used, but they're only truly
compatible if you do some work yourself; the main reason is that some of
the ideas behind magic were changed for third edition. The same goes for
vehicles, as the Rigger Black Book system (which SR2 used) was ditched in
favor of the Rigger 2 system.

As for first-edition supplements, you need to do about the same amount of
work on them to make them compatible with 3rd edition as to change them
over to 2nd. Which is to say, not all that much, especially with
adventures.

No need for that. You can use stuff like the Street Samurai Catalog,
Fields of Fire, and Cybertechnolgy for 99.9% without needing updates for
third edition.

The second printing does not include any errata as far as I could tell. I
haven't seen a third printing (yet -- I probably will if/when someone else
in my group decides to buy an SR3 as well), so I don't know anything about
that.
