_Has_ to get a teacher? How hermetical. <hmph>
Actually the idea of a teacher replacing the magic group as the basis of
the discount in initiating makes sense. I just want my option of roughing
it on my own. Gotta keep up that loner persona dontcha know. Besides,
someone has to invent new theories somewhere in the timeline of events.

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.

Teachers don't replace groups for decreased initiation, but you must learn
metamagical abilities frm somewhere. No more "I'm an initiate!" *poof* all
knowledge of metamagic is granted. Teachers could take many forms, from
members of your group to free spirits to totems in certain cases I would
think...you get the idea. There may also be certain groups/totems that demand
that metamagic be learned in a certain order, or that certain abilities are
forbidden. I hope that was a tad more clear.

The problem I have with always needing a teacher is the implied fact
that the knowledge has always been there, there was never a time that the
knowledge to do something didn't exist. I believe in self taught
manifestations but I don't believe it comes easy.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the knowledge has always existed, but
it's been long enough since magic returned to the world that there are
people now to teach these things. Sure it's probably possible to learn
them on your own, but it's going to be a damn site more difficult, and with
things like shielding the lessons could be a tad dangerous. Really it has
to come down to a role playing thing IMHO, and I'm judging by your post
that you would agree. I wouldn't remove the rule frmo the main books
though as it is really going to be a way to keep the big M's in check.
