I don't know if it's canon or our house rule (can't remember right now) but
we always halve the called shot modifier in melee combat, and allow for
aiming for attack or counterattack. Once you start doing that, you can get
into strategy of the combat, without making it too complicated.

You're the sammy who goes first but decides to aim instead of couterattack.
When Bruce the physad attacks, you counterattack with a -2 TN. Now you
either go for a direct shot, or make a called shot for effect. Take out the
knee, and he has trouble kicking you or running. Take out an eye and he has
vision mods. Good reason to wear eye protection, the other guy has to break
it first.

Oh, and not attacking and using your action to air for a counterattack is a
nice way for those speed demons to do a lot better in melee combat. After
the first set of actions, you spend as many of the rest of them as you can
aiming for your next attack.

Ex.

Sam has Skill 6, Reaction 10
Bruce has Skill 6, Reaction 6

Sam goes on a 21, Bruce on 9

Sam spends his first action aiming for counterattack
Bruce spends his action attacking with 6 skill dice, TN 4
Sam counterattacks with 6 skill dice, but has two simple action of aiming,
TN 2
Result: Sam has 2 net successes, Bruce takes a light at the end

On 11 and 1, Sam spends 3 simple actions aiming for counterattack and uses
the last one to get in some viscious taunts

Next initiative

Sam goes on a 19, Bruce on a 12

Sam attacks, called shot to the eyes to blind (special effect, we call it
+4 in melee), TN 4+4-3=5
Bruce counterattacks, light wound, TN 4+1=5
Result: Bruce has one net success, Sam stages it down to nothing

On 9 Sam aims to counterattack
On 2 Bruce attacks, TN5
Sam counterattacks, TN2
Result: Sam has 4 net sucesses, Bruce is knocked out.

There's a case where the higher skill beats the same speed.

I believe that on is a house rule...though I've never fidgeted around with
called shots, so I could have missed the rule, though I'm pretty sure that
aiming is only for rangeed combat...though it's an interesting idea to add
to melee.

Gotta love those OSHA approved safety goggles :)

The speed demons usually do better to flee outside contact range and open
fire...you can't be counterattacked when you're shooting, unless the gun
blows up or your grenade launcher scatters.

Free Action:Gesture....gotta love it. I know I do, though it can be
tricky to flip someone off while wileding a manriki-gusari (sp?)

Blind attacks are a +8 aren't they?

Wouldn't this be superior speed beating equal skill? No, wait...wrong
thread :)

Better for the cases where you have to be quiet about it, or can't get to
the gn in question.

>Blind attacks are a +8 aren't they?

The modifier to make an attack while you are blind is a plus 8. We say that
the called shot to MAKE someone bline (ie poking them in the eye) is a +4.
If you're punching its stun and it'll eventually come back. For a +8, its
physical and they lose the eye...

Actually, I was answering both threads. And I meant to say that it was
higher speed beats equal skill. I just need to get more sleep...

I think he means "to shoot the guy in order to blind him..." ;P
