ALTERNATE METHOD FOR BUILDING A SHADOWRUNNER FOR SR3
(by David Buehrer)
The following Point Cost System may be used in place of SR3’s Priority System
when creating a shadowrunner. While the Point Cost System mimics SR3’s
Priority System it is more flexible. It may also be easily adjusted to suit
the starting power level of your game.
The Point Cost System works by allocating points to a category of character
creation. The number of points a character has to spend on the Modified
Character Creation Table is determined by his race.
Race Points
Human 12
Dwarf/Ork 12
Troll/Elf 11
For a higher- or lower-powered campaign a GM need only increase or decrease
the
amount of points characters have to start with. For example, a GM wishing to
start a low-powered campaign may decrease the starting points for all the
races
by 1 or more. A GM who wants starting characters to be more powerful may
increase the starting points for all the races by 1.
During character creation only one category may be assigned 5 points. The
player is free to distribute the rest of his character’s points however he
wishes.
MODIFIED CHARACTER CREATION TABLE
Point Cost Magic Attributes Skills Resources
5 30 50 1,000,000Y
4 Metahuman FM 27 40 400,000Y
3 Human FM, Metahuman A/AM 24 34 90,000Y
2 Human A/AM 21 30 20,000Y
1 18 27 5,000Y
(FM=Full Magician, AM=Aspected Magician, Aept)
We will now create a three characters using the Point Cost System.
Fred the Human Adept is being created for a campaign that starts at a high
power level, and we have 13 points to assign to the categories. 2 points are
assigned to Magic, because Fred is an Adept, leaving 11 points. 5 points are
assigned to Attributes (Fred’s pretty tough), leaving 6 points. Because 5
points were assigned to Attributes, no more than 4 points may be assigned to
either of the other categories. Since Fred is well versed in the killing
arts,
4 points are assigned to Skills. That leaves 2 points for Resources, which
makes sense, seeing as how Fred was raised in a Monastery.
Mulligan the Dwarf Detective is being created for a standard campaign. We
have
12 points to spend. We decide to make Mulligan a well rounded character, and
assign 4 points to each of the categories of Attributes, Skills, and
Resources.
Mendicant the Troll Ganger is being created for a low-powered street
campaign.
We have 10 points to spend. Because he lives on the street we figure his
starting resources will be low, so we assign 1 points to Resources. That
leaves us with 8 points. We decide to make Mendicant a self taught Aspected
Mage (an elementalist), which costs 3 points, leaving 5 points. Mendicant has
never gone to school, so we assign 1 point to Skills. That leaves 3 points
for
Attributes.
