Subject: SR 3rd edition and the SR Companion

Hello;

I just joined this list about 1 hour ago. So far I haven't found any
FAQ's or anything mentioning this.

With the publication of a new edition I have rejoined the SR world (I
sold my hardcover 2nd edition in 1996 along with all the source material
and about 300 other gaming items, all but the GURPS and Hero items I
owned at the time... just about).

Now I'm wondering if I should get the companion, or if an upcoming 3rd
edition update is planned like with Awakenings and Grimoire and the
Cyberware books (per page 324 of SR 3rd edition). Anyone here know?

Thank you.

Hi there! Welcome to the list!

Hope you like Mail! :]

I'm sure that someone will quickly point you in the right direction, but
unfortunately I don;t have the current FAQ Address handy...

OK... Here's the scoop...

There may be a SR Companion comining out for 3rd edition. However, if one
is made, it won;t be for at least a year. And the current Companion still
mostly applies.

The two Magic books get an update and are combined in the upcoming Magic In
The Shadows book written by Steve Kenson, who is on the list (Hi Steve! :))
BTW: MITS looks GOOD :]

There is also a new Gun Book (Cannon Companion) and Cyber Book (Man and
Machine) planned. These will update and compile all the various guns and
gadgets to date, and will also have some new stuff.

VR2 and Rigger 2 will remain the same.

Seattle 2 comes out soon, as does a new GM screen, which will include
critters and stuff.

That's pretty much it :] ENjoy :]

I have no idea. Most of the Companion is still usable with SR3, though --
things like the edges and flaws, optional rules, and so on mostly still
apply to SR3. Only the things like the revised skill web and defaulting
rules don't fit in SR3, or have been added into it.

I agree mostly with you (as even some of the tables were integrated in
SR3rd.) but I do think that there is a problem and that the Compendium
needs to be fixed in a few parts.
I mean the whole Chargen section, the one thing I'd liked the most.
I remember someone on the list mentioning an update (a sugestion more or
less) saying that you get 116 pt. for Chargen, droping the costs for
metahumans to 5 for Elves/Trolls and 3 for Dwarfs/Orks and lifting the
amount of money (for 5 pts. you'll get 20.000 Y). My problem is, that after
calculating some Charakters I'll end up asking myself how to integrate the
whole "Attribute-linked-Skills- Thing" into the system. If you leave it out
you'll sure get some balanced Chars but they are a bit overpowered compared
to the priorities based Chars. If you facture the costs in you're a bit
underpowered. The difference was only slight (about 8 to 13 pts to write
the min/max) but nonetheless there.
Any Ideas over there?
I tried a bit with the old 100 pts in cunjunction with Atributecost of 1
point.
Dwarfs and Orks cost 5 pts. and Elves/Trolls cost 10 pts. each, after some
mathematics I saw that Orks tend to get overpowered and Elves a bit under
(something round 8 to 10 pts. difference). Humans get way too much pts. to
spend under this system, but maybe someone out there can make something out
of this quick start.
If nothing comes up I'll use that 116 pts that was mentioned earlier as it
seems to me, it is the most well rounded. Allthough not perfect.
;o)
Thats it IMO.

If you were talking about my update, it was 10 for elves/trolls and 5 for
dwarves/orks.

I've used the Standard BP system +16 points with the skill cost increased
if the skill exceeds that stat. I use it in a spreadsheet and the
formula comes down to if (Skill Rating) is less than (Linked Attribute),
Cost is equal to (Skill Rating). Otherwise, Cost is equal to ((Linked
Attribute) + 2 *((Skill Rating) - (Linked Attribute))). Does that help?

When I make chars with that sys, they come out fine. :)

A bit late reviewd, but thanks afterwards. After some Calc. it works fine
for me.
