Last night, two of my friends and I got together to try out some mechanics
in SR4.

They are a mage and a technomancer. First up: simple combat.

The Ork Sprawl Ganger (sample character) vs them. No modifiers, plain sight,
well lit, (we ignored range, oops).

First combat turn, mage cast force 5 stun bolt. Ork took 3 boxes of stun.*
Technomancer Observed in Detail to see if any cops were around, then tried
to Intimidate the Ork by showing his HK.** Ork fired his Roomsweeper on
Medium Spread, missing the Technomancer, but hitting the Mage for 5 boxes of
Physical. He fires it again, hitting the Technomancer and causing 6 boxes of
stun. He also hits the mage again for another 5 boxes of physical; the mage
loses conciousnous.

Second combat turn, Technomancer draws his MP5-TX and fires a burst (3) at
the ork. He misses. The Ork returns fire causing 5 boxes of physical, and
then another 5 boxes of physical on his second shot. The Technomancer loses
conciousnous.

5 combat turns later, both players bleed out and die on a crowded city
street.

*NOTE: We didn't realise that magic doesn't use the same "Opposed test to
see if you hit, and how well, then a resistance test to see how much damage
the target takes" mechanic as gunfire for "Direct Combat Spells" such as
stun- and powerbolt. As such, the Ork resisted and only took 3 boxes of stun
instead of 6. However, had he taken the full amount, the combat would
probably have gone just about the same. Also, we did use modifiers for
wounds, when doing things such as shooting and initiative.

**NOTE: The Technomancer didn't actually have Intimidation, so defaulted to
his Charisma and ended up rolling only 1 die. The Ork did have Intimidation
and rolled two net hits. What would have happened in that case? I ruled that
the Intimidation simply didn't work.

Thoughts on combat? We figured out where we went wrong with magic, so we
won't make that mistake again. Also, gun combat is LETHAL, and very quickly
so (as it should be). We don't see small combats taking all that long to
resolve.
