A SR game is in the pre-planning stages at FIT. No concepts or story only
basic idea tossing. I have been consulted multiple times but the game isn't
actually being worked on as of yet. My guess is that a game would not see the
light of day until 1998 at the earliest.

Personally, I'd like to see someone like Kesmai do an Sr (no capital
'R') game on the net. (hint hint) First person....maybe on a scale
like daggerfall's towns with other areas to go to. Just a thought.

If the game is going to be multi player capable (and I think it could be)
then I'd rather see it work using TCP/IP rather than a secondary provider.
I've got bunches of ideas for the game. I don't know if FIT has a protocol
for submissions/suggestions, or even if they want them, but I'd volunteer a
few if they want to listen.

Which reminds me, is FIT going to get a page or a segment of the FASA page?

First person games are only good for one person (in the party). I like
first person games okay (Ultima Underworld was great), but I want a TEAM! I
want to manage a number of people with different skills and such. And I am
sick of real-time combat, especially when you have to manage more than one
person (like Eye of the Beholder) or when the computer controls your
teammates, who invariably do stupid things. Multi-player would be ok, I
guess, but not at the expense of the game itself. I can deal with
substandard graphics and don't have to have all kinds of multi-media crap.
Maybe because I grew up on text adventure games like Adventure and Zork
that I look more to the essense of the game rather than wiz graphics. I
just want a good game, where you manage a Shadowrun TEAM.

Sorry to rant, but ever since the new Wolfenstien came out the so-called
"role-playing" computer game have basically dissappeared. Everything is
single-character doom clones. The old "gold box" D&D games had a great
combat system and team combat. Call me old fashioned, but I want those kind
of games back. TSR came out with the Buck Rogers computer game, and that
was great. The concept sounded lame, but I got it and loved it.

As you might have guessed, I'd volunteer a few suggestions as well. I'm a
long-time computer gamer, and never liked the shoot-em-up games that are
currently saturating the market. I've turned to strategy games because
there is nothing else. The Ultima series started out great, but ever since
they changed to a real-time, computer controlled combat, the combat element
of the game is nil. Combat isn't everything, but it is a big part.

BTW, I played the Genesis Shadowrun game, and it wan't too bad, considering
the platform. I heard good things about the nintendo version as well. I
would love to see a Shadowrun game on the computer.

I was very happy with the game play of the SR SNES game, just not so happy
with the plot. :-)

I'd like to see a new SR PC game done with an interface like the classic
X-Com - UFO Defense games, at least for combat, and maybe even for decking.

The SR SNES game was good. I liked it. I do agree with the X-Com
combat system. Its also in a new game called Wages of War and will
be in Hostage whenever that is released. The system is very good,
and could allow you to do decking and ground combat at the same time.

I said Kesmai and net...that already means a multiplayer only game.

The game doesn't have to be substandard just because it's
multi-player. It could be done properly within the limits the net
would add.

That's not what I was talking about at all. I agree that a game
where you manage a team would be great, but I prefer multi to single
player games (the reason I play Multiplayer Battletech and not
Mechwarrior2.)

> Sorry to rant, but ever since the new Wolfenstien came out the so-called

Never was such a thing. SSI's gold box games were the closest to
RPG's, but never really came close. Multiplayer allows you to assume
a role, thus roleplay.

I agree that these games were good, but to call them 'role playing
games' is a stretch.

I am also an old time computer player (I still have all of the old
infocom games and a 8088 to play them on.) I have also turned to
strategy games lately and am not a big fan of real time anything, but
I also feel that you cannot roleplay by yourself with the computer
AI.

I put "role playing" in quotes because that is what they were called, I
don't consider them role playing games and always thought that title was a
joke.

There are different kinds of games for different people. I didn't mean to
put down the kind of games you like, I just meant to complain that they
don't make the kind of game I like anymore. And a Shadowrun game is the
perfect candidate for a "role-playing" game in the old style. But they will
probably have to make the kind of game everyone else wants [sigh]

I played one multi-player game on the Sierra Network called Shadow of
Yserbius or something like that. It certainly didn't promote role-playing.
Everyone I adventured with just wanted to kill, explore, kill, and move,
move, move! They were impatient when I tried to talk to them, and when I
lead the party they would complain I was going too slow. It might have been
because we were charged by the minute. If you are at home or on a free or
flat rate then maybe people would role-play.

I have to agree with the setiment about the X-com engine. I'd like
to see an updated version, though. I've always thought that WH40K
would look good in that engine as well.

Someone else who agrees! We said that same sentiment about a year and a
half or 2 years ago when our buddy first picked up X-Com...

On a side note, anyone else think X-com would make an interesting RPG?

I also like the kinds of games that you said you like (I HATE find
the pixel games.) I would not complain if either or both types of
games were produced.

Must be the crowd. I played EGA Multiplayer Mechwarrior on GEine,
spent lots of money and had a great time roleplaying both inside of
the game and on the related message areas. There wasn't as much of
the clock watching sect there.

It's definately do-able, but has been done to death in one form or

When did GDW (shudder) attempt an X-COM game? I never saw nor heard about
it...

If I wasn't involved with so much crap now, I'd work on it...

It wasn't quite the same, but Dark Conspiracies is the same basic
concept with the exception of not being part of a military unit.

Games where the players are a part of a unit generally are less
interesting, BTW. I played a lot of TW2000 and you had to have the
right mindset for it.

Along these same lines, I have a question about something I've heard rumors
about.

(puts on the asbestos suit, glare-reducing goggles, and hides behind a fire
wall)

What is the status of a possible CCG based on SR. I realize lots of people
detest these things, but to me, they are good alternatives for blowing a
couple of hours when you cant get enough folks together for full blown
RPGing.

It wasn't an X-COM role playing game, for several reasons. 1) it was out
way before X-COM was even a pipe dream. 2). There's a lot more things in
it than there is in X-COM (the populace knew more) and 3). Lester Smith
is pretty damn cool (ok, this really isn't a reason, but I thought I'd
throw that in)

Have you seen or played Conspiracey X? Not only is it an X-files type
conspiracey thing it also has a point at the beggining where you have to
build your "Base".
Our base is buried way beneath Chicago (access through the coal tunnels?) and
has a lab witha load a scientist, a workshop w/ technician, barracks w/
soilders. the fact that my character has his own Gym and pool has nothing to
with this but is pretty cool anyway :).
