As little as 2, to as many as 10, but if you're a beginning GM,
though, I wouldn't try to handle anything more than 4. Find out what
your players would like to do, and what kind of story you'd like to run,
and go from there. If the players don't care for your story, they won't
get into it. And if the GM doesn't like the game he's running, well,
lets just say, don't ever let the GM get bored with running. Things
could get real hazardous to the players. [Hint to your players: ALWAYS
placate the GM. Offerings of cupcakes and other goodies MAY sway the
'Gods' to grant you that extra Karma reroll when you're about to fall
off that 100 foot cliff, or be eaten by that hungry piasma that's just
come out of hibernation].
Don't worry too much if things get 'out of hand'. Almost
everybody's first game tends to stray into the 'Outer Limits' of
munchkinism. As you get a feel for the rules and the setting, things
will start to make more sense to you and your players on what the
'proper' power levels should be [unless they're Power Gamers, in which
case NO amount of explaining is going to change how they see anything
:-].
If you're players enjoy what you do, size doesn't matter.
And if you get to the point where nobody's enjoying what they're
doing, STOP. Take a step back, a deep breath, and when everybody's
feeling that spark again, get into it again. Never forget, the whole
point is to have FUN.
Musings of a WAY too old GM :-]
