Every game month or two I like to give my players news stories that their
characters found through various sources. I tell them that these stories
may or may not have any connection to any or all of the characters. The
problem is I don't have lots of time to come up with stories unrelated to
the current plot line, and I don't want to give them stories that all
have to do with the characters. So I am shamelessly soliticing stories.
I've included two stories as examples. Note-I do not have any training in
journalism (that should be obvious), so these really are more summaries
than actual "taken for the headlines" type stories.

#1
Missing Heiress Only has One Month Left <October 10>
Ann Nichols, the only surviving child of Joseph and Amanda Nichols is
still missing. It was discovered last February through a routine audit of
SINless shelters that Ann had survived the brutal attack which left the
rest of her family dead 13 long years ago. According to the terms of Mr.
Nichols' Will, Ann has only until her 18th birthday to step foreword and
lay claim to the family fortune currently valued at over 10 million
nuyen. Ann ran away from the shelter she had been living in the past 11
years in December 2052, just 2 short months short of discovering her
identity, and has not been seen since. She turns 18 on November 11.

#2
Death Stalks the University of Washington <September 12>
Ravenna Park, University of Washington: The sun shines down on this
idyllic setting, but no students are playing frisbee, or feeding the
ducks along the peaceful stream which happily gurgles its way through the
collection of trees and fields that normally make this a popular
location. No, Death stalks this park, and people are living in fear.
Early this morning the mutilated body of 20 year old Suzanne Emory was
found floating in the stream. She is the fourth victim of a madman
hunting the terrified students. Over the last 5 days, 4 students have
been found murdered in this park. Lone Star refuses to comment on
possible suspects or motives claiming to do so would jeopardize their
investigation. This reporter feels differently and diligently pursues the
truth an uncaring Law enforcement community conceals from the very people
who's lives are threatened by this psychopath. Further details will be
made available as they are uncovered.

Thanks,
Aeriochrome

Dunno if you like to just buy stuff, or if your local library has a wide
selection of RPG books... but in the Chicago Arcology sourcebook for
Cyberspace... the book is filled with news headlines (just headlines, no
stories). Might not be for everybody... some of them are quite odd.

Hey, so do I.. I'm busy writing for my new campaign, should start in a
month, I'm pre-genning the first few months of game time.

*snip and gobble problem and neat stories*

All right, I'll bite.

No dates on these, I'll write them generic so they can be placed whenever
you like

PEACEFULL RALLY TURNS RACIST
Downtown Seattle

The case of Ann McWorth, a Seattle school teacher, recently made public
headlines. Ann McWorth is an Ork and has been denied tenure, based on what
the school board defines as "mitigating circumstances". However, the
members of the group O.R.C., the Orkish Rights Commision, see it
differently.

Last Tuesday night, members of O.R.C. were marching in protest outside of
the school where Ann McWorth was teaching when several unknown assialants
assulted John "Big Buddy" Dukes, the head spokesperson for O.R.C.
Unwilling to stand idly by, the rest of the group was caught up in the
fracas. Several thousand dollars damage was done to school property and
Lone Star had to be called in to break up the mob. Several beatings and
arrests were made. O.R.C. could not be reached for comment, but this
certainly does not bode well for the case of Ann McWorth.

White Tiger Enterprises is making a surprise bid into military software.
The lead CEO of White Tiger, Damien Witherspoon, announced in a press
conference that White Tiger will be shifting from a hardware to a software
basis. This comes as a fair surprise, as White Tiger makes arming
circuitry and targeting system hardware. White Tiger apparently has the
factories and workers this endeavor requires, though retooling existing
factories should have taken months. Still, Mr. Witherspoon had a plethora
of products to demo to a hungry crowd. Witherspoon gave a sweeping speech,
detailing how this is just one more step toward the completion of the joint
Military Attack Helicopter known as the Black Panther, which is still in
the design phase.

The body which washed up on Pier 34 has been tentively identified as Dan
Ivanson, a supposed member of the Russian Mafia. Ivanson had been missing
for two days prior. Initial police reports show cuts and abrasions along
the face and neck of Ivanson indicating possible foul play, no suspects
have been named.
Dan "Ironman" Ivanson was a well known philanthropist, and owner of a
massive estate. Since his untimely death, his belongings are being
auctioned, with all proceeds benefiting several of Ivanson's favorite
charities. Prices are expected to be high, as Ivanson was a collector of
rare and mysterious items, and several unknown buyers are reputed to have a
heavy interest in claiming somethings for their own.

Still no idea about what killed an off duty Lone Star Mage-detective. Sgt.
Lugh Dillion was found Thursday night, missing eyes and tounge, and with
blood seeping from his body. Lone Star has launched a full investigation
of this matter, going so far as to bring in a specialist, Roger Trent, from
San Francisco. We will keep you posted.

There.. more as I think em up

<SNIP(TM)!>

Folks, might I suggest that you head on over to the Deep Resonance Forums,
under the "Run and Run Ideas" and put this stuff up to the "TSS"
issues that
build up every so often (such as right now?).

Current build up can be found at ...

Do enjoy, I know Adam and the rest would like to see this built up more.

This is just a nit, but... I took Russian for two semesters and Ivanson is no
Russian name. It's also not a last name. A Russian name, for instance, would be
Sergei Nicolaievich Golovko (Thanks to Tom Clancy). So Dan Ivanovich would be
what his friends call him, but his name would be Dan Ivanovich (something). I'd
suggest something like Grimalka or Klivrok or something similar.

LOL you remind me of a friend I know. ;)

The name can of couse be changed per gm.. I stole it from a very, very,
very bad late night crime fighter show I saw last night. Forget the name,
what did you think of the hook? That's what I wanna know.

What if his family Americanized the name (assuming that he was living in the
UCAS)?

You might want to check out Tad Williams' "Otherland" series of
books. They're about a powerful group of men and women who are trying to
create an ultra-realistic Matrix environment for nefarious reasons. More
importantly, though, each chapter begins with a little Cyberpunk/Shadowrun -
esque news blurb. Some might not fit a Shadowrun campaign, but most would
be great background fluff pieces. I'm sure you can expand upon them and
create full-fledged news stories, and you can't do better than that if you
want to give the players a sense that there's a dynamic world moving all
around them.

Hope this helps,
Tony
