Hi ppl

I was talking to my GM (gurth) and we where discussing an
number of things.

But the one that was interesting inuf to put on here was:

If our group go's on an shadowrun we take:

A: all our guns we think we are going to need
B: grenade's and other explosives
C: we put on our armour
D: we go on the run

Now i'm the only one that takes some extra stuf to make sure
i have things for if we run into a surprise

Now i want to know what do you "normally" take with you on an run

I mean mages take spells stuf with them ok but what els
A streetsam takes knife's and lots of guns an more ammo

But what els?

I had a character that used to take extra equipment with him. He
was a decker, so he virtually always carried his microtronics toolkit with
him on most runs. This gave him all the tools he needed to perform any
electronics or computer related tasks (like pulling drives out of
computers or bypassing cardreaders).
In addition, I used to carry what I called the "standard kit."
This contained a Swiss Army knife, waterproof electrical tape, a small
ball of string, a waterproof tube with 20 matches inside, a small
flashlight, a Zippo lighter, and some toilet paper. This was all in a
fairly compact little pack (like a jogger's pack) that I wore on pretty
much every run. That way, the GM always knew that I had this stuff with
me, so if anything strange ever happened or I needed to do something
unusual (like the time I had to rig an impromptu booby-trap using a
grenade, some string, and some tape), I was prepared and the GM knew it.

As I mostly play shadowrun via IRC these days, I tend to copy&paste
together all stuff I need. I group everything to three packages:

1 - clothing, armor, everything in the pockets and on the belt
2 - everything in the combat webbing / combat vest , the longarm plus
accessories.
3 - everything in and on the backpack

The gear itself :

armor (self-explaining)
weapons (longarm, backup handgun and a silenced pistol if necessary)
explosives (grenades, pre-formed charges for doors or other obstacles the
team has to bypass)
electronics (radio, ultrasound-goggles if needed, listening devices, bugs,
jammers, etc)
other tools (crowbar, boltcutter, simple stuff like accu-powered
screwdriver, multitool, tape, etc)

How else are you going to put the henchman back together?

As for for running gear, here's a few items (these are from several
characters):
Splash grenades with Freeze Foam, Splat Glue, and/or Slip Spray
Solvents for Freeze Foam and Splat Glue.
A dose or two of Witch's Moss.
Medpacs.
At least one, sometimes two or three back-up guns/weapons
At least one knife
At least one melee weapon (can be the above knife, shock gloves common)
Thermo/low-light goggles if no natural or cyber vision enhancements.
Usually several armor options (commonly Form-Fitting or Second Skin with
something over, like lined-coat or armored jacket)
Earplug cellphone
basic toolkit
flashlight (commonly pocket AND large)
Nav-dat GPS
Map chips
HUD Data-display unit
Lingua-soft chips
Extra skill-softs if anyone has skillwires.
surveilance/counter surveilance gear as appropriate.
plain gloves if not wearing shock gloves or hardliner gloves. (not
uncommon to have spare thin gloves for fine work)

Shadowrunner teams in general may need more gear, but I like to play
loose games to encourage players to develop their character's styles. In
my games, the runners don't have to worry about wearing masks or hiding
tattoos/scars, etc as much as in most. If I want something to bite the
runners in the butt, it'll happen regardless of whether they are wearing
skimasks or not. (But if you run around with your SIN(s) tattooed on your
forehead, you're just asking for it.)

Hmm... on a different note, I think I just got an idea for a NPC ...

In the team I GM, each member usually has the following:

Micro-Transceiver (with high rating encryption)
At least one phone (set to vibro alert)
Bellaclava (usually beanie bellaclavas)

At least one team member, usually two, carries the following:

Microtronics Tool Kit
Vehicle Tool Kit
Gloves (both coarse and fine)
GPS
Map chips of area
Plastic Explosives
Neuro Stun Grenades
Gaffer Tape (Oh boy my players use a lot of this stuff!)
Medkit
Stim Patches
Gamma Scopalamine (often in an Ares Squirt)
Survival Kit or Survival Knife (which has stuff in the hilt)
Ration Bars (you never know when you might have to camp out
someplace for a long period)

And probably a whole load of stuff that I've forgotten. Usually they manage
to take so much stuff that they are unable to carry it all, and have to
decide what gets left in their vehicles at some point.

An interesting point regarding the ration bars: they were just on a trip
into Africa, and for food they packed:

Lots of highly nutritious but yucky tasking ration bars (light, and
they keep forever)
A simsense chip that makes you think you're eating delicious gourmet
delecacies

This was a lot healthier (and tastier) than their road trip across the
California Free State where they stocked up at a Stuffer Shack by buying
_every_ drink there, about 2000Y worth of food, and the shops microwave.

Well, one of the members of our group ALWAYS brought one of those Kodak
Funsaver cameras on the run. I don't remember why. We just made sure we had
it. We also had microtransceivers (tuned to the same freq). Each specialist
would have his equipment. We never wore baclavas, or masks, or anything like
that. I don't know why...

Something like that all depends on your character and
where they are in their lives. Setting aside the fact
that a good radio with ECCM and encryption can cost in
the tens of thousands (hmmm...DocWagon Platinum or
radio...DocWagon Platinum or radio...?), having a
radio simply isn't always in character. Generally, my
PCs start with a radio of sorts and between 2 and 10
phones of various sorts and 1 to 5 pagers. However,
some of my characters are loners, just getting into
the biz and other such types where it's simply not
feasible that they would have spend over 10 grand on a
radio, and I'm sure other people have similar
characters.

Same thing with the Pocket Secretary - why, pray tell,
would an ex-ganger have spent 3 grand on a Pocket
Secretary when that nice Smartlink II only costs 200
more?

Of course, setting character reasons aside, both of
these items are quite useful for any character to
have. Also, a number of cellular items - and I do
recommend having multiples of each. Think about it -
are you sure you want your parole officer (if you have
one), your mother, your teammates and your fixer to
all be calling the one number? What if you do a lot of
undercover work? My face-type characters generally
give one number when they're pretending to be someone
- then, once that identity needs to disappear, they
can just toss (or destroy) the phone/pager and they
don't have to worry about giving out a new number to
all their friends. Or if they get rumbled and think
their phone might be traced, they can toss it without
having to worry to pick up another one to stay in
touch with people.

It would of been on mine, but like I said, the games I run/play in tend
to be pretty lax about this stuff. But the Pocket Secretary is one I
forgot. It should go with your duct tape, coathangers, and swiss army
knives. :) I've also had a character or two bring along micro drones. (A
while back I even made a post on a drone-based sniping system. Involved
quite a bit of rule bending :)) And of course, if you've got more
skillsofts than chip slots, get a skill soft jukebox. Uhm, has anyone
mentioned wire cutters? :)

You now, the more I think about this, the more I realize I can't answer
Chip's question. The list of possible gear could go on forever. You
really have to sit down before the run and plan what you will need and
take nothing more. Otherwise, you'll need a cybered troll just to carry
the gear.

The problem is that you always find more stuff to take along which you
_really_ can't do without :)

As the very bare necessities, I'd probably go for:

* a pistol (either heavy or machine) with good Concealability and a few
clips of all-purpose ammo
* a micro-transceiver with good encryption
* a wristphone with screen
* form-fitting body armor

But that'd be just for walking around Seattle when not doing business :)
Actually on a run, it's going to depend on what you plan to do next and
what you expect to run into. For talking to contacts, the above will do
(maybe with a few additions) while to do a head-on attack on an
Aztechnology compound you're going to need quite a bit more stuff :)

Seems like stealing one (pocket secretary, not smartlink 2 implant) would be
ridiculously easy...

No, but why does that require multiple phones? Much slicker just to route
multiple numbers to whatever phone you happen to be carrying.

Sure, but that's an in-game issue - and if you're
smart, once you start running you'll hardly be
boosting Pocket Secretaries and other such pitiful
crap, just in case you get caught and they link your
rather more heinous crimes to you.

Of course, you could say that you didn't actually buy
it, you boosted it and still spend the starting
resources on it. But I don't like doing that kind of
thing unless I find it's really necessary. If it
doesn't fit the character, it doesn't fit the
character.

Well, not knowing a heap about mobile technology, I'll
trust you can do that, but what happens when, for some
reason or another, you need to ditch that phone, or
you lose it? Hmmm? And, especially when you're on an
undercover job or the like, you don't REALLY want your
mum, your boy/girlfriend and/or your parole officer to
be able to reach you anyway, now do you?

According to the SR rules, a mobile can be traced if
it's on and not having it on kinda defeats the purpose
(of course, pagers get you around that). But if
someone's trying to trace one of your numbers, or you
suspect they might, that kinda means you need to shut
that phone off. If you have multiple phones, people
can still call you. If you don't, well, you're kinda
incommunicado then, aren't you?

Cellphones and pagers are cheap enough that the
benefits of having multiples of each outweigh the costs.

(both of these are for when I need a raw power with little sublety)
Barrett Model 121
(nice but damn big)
(sometimes)Ceska-vz in forarm, spring loaded holster
(sometimes)Shuriken

depending on what the perameters are

Gear:
One tear proof- water proof bag(for holding everything I don't want in my pocket)
credsticks/IDs
Pocket computer or cell phone(high encription, medium ECCM)
-I spent a good amount of cash on a consealable pocket computer, and it has been worth
it
Fiber optic line(for using spells around corners, seeing around corners, ect)
(sometimes) a kit (microtronics or Demolitions)
Electrical tape, kleen tac, fishing line, mainly for setting grenade traps
(sometimes)monofiliment scissors
flashlight (low light or thermo)
sometimes plasteel-7 and a catalist can be very handy(shapable metal)
flares(lighing flares)
lighter
data chip
hat pin(very usefull)
plastic restraints
Micro transever(high encription)
(sometimes)GPS
Micro Camera(cause you never know when a kodak moment might pop-up)
Trenq Patches(if you don't want to kill someone)
battery and wires(useful)
plyers
scissors
swiss army knife
Flash Pack!(saved my ass from snipers)
(sometimes)handy chemecals like, acid, or zen in a injector pistol
Pepper punch, disguised as pen

the list goes on........

Magical stuff
I usualy only carry a 1-3 focci because they indicate I am a magic user and they can have
harmfull effects
though I have tonnes of different focci
like a levitation focus that looks like a magic carpet
or a physical mask focus that looks like a mask
ect

Catching up on mail... here's a commentary I did when I was trying to
create a website with good resources. YMMV

When creating characters for a friend's campaign awhile back it was
decided that we would use the point
system in the Shadowrun Companion. Things were going great, decent
attributes, good list of skills, then
the money... oops, lemme check those points again... ok, I can either
rework all of my points or settle for
only 5,000¥. What the hell, let's see what I can get for 5,000¥.

Ok, I'll admit it, I didn't think it was possible either. After all, I
was creating a Decker!! But when you
think about it, what's the fun in a starting character who has
everything?? I broke it down into the basics
and gave my character the bare necessities to start in the shadows. It
should be noted that for the most
part when making characters we ignore the street index unless it is a
very rare item. With only 5,000¥ to
spend, that's not a even a consideration.

First, there is armor. After all you want your character to live even
if you catch a few rounds right??

Level 3 Form-Fitting Body Armor: 500¥
Secure Clothing: 450¥
Secure Long Coat: 650¥

>>>>>[Pretty much the standard, can't get better without delving into
security or military grade
armor]<<<<<

Second, you need weapons. Regardless of your Archetype it usually
helps to have another hand who can shoot a gun.

H & K MP5TX: 850¥
Ares Predator: 450¥
Ceska vz/120: 500¥

>>>>>[Ok, the MP5TX may not carry the most firepower but it is the
easiest to conceal and it has an
SA mode meaning you can fire one round at a time and conserve ammo if
needs be. I picked the
original Predator over the Pred II because it is cheaper, lighter, and
easier to conceal, a smartgun link
can always be added once you have a use for it. The Ceska again is the
best in concealment with a
decent amount of ammo, add a silencer and you have a nice piece for
quiet ops that don't have armored
opposition]<<<<<

Third, wouldn't it be nice to have cyberware? Sure it would, but don't
expect much.

Level 1 DataJack: 500¥

>>>>>[I know this is skimpy but when you think about it, this one
piece is very useful and will let you
branch off into pretty much any archetype that uses cyber]<<<<<
-Cymon (**:**:**/**-**-**)

Last, everyone needs a lifestyle. Congrats! You can still afford a
month at low for 1,000¥.

This leaves you with 100¥, or 10¥ to add to your character's starting
money. Personally, even though we
consider weapon prices to include one full load of ammo, I spend the
left over ¥ to buy extra rounds.
It should be noted that it would be a good idea to use some of your
starting money to flesh out a few
necessities, like a pocket secretary. My character being a decker
decided to get a deck the old-fashioned
way, he stole it.
