Read Renraku Arcology: Shutdown. The tree is related to Deus in some
manner, but I'm not sure exactly how ... perhaps Steve or Dave can shed
some light?

No, the tree is not Deus, it's Psychotrope, the one who up until now has been
creating most of the otaku on the planet.

Uhm ... but was Babel's refusal to saccrifice himself for the tree not a
betrayal? And who rants about being betrayed by Babel? Deus. I did not
say that the tree WAS Deus but that the tree was related to Deus (and who
said that the tree at the end was the same tree that made Babel into an
Otaku? The tree could be a representation of Deus' aquistion of the
ability to create Otaku ...). Also, in RA:S Deus' matrix "lair" includes
a tree.

I haven't read the novel that dealt with Psychotrope, but the strong
impression that I got by comparing the events in Technobabel to what
information is mentioned in RA:S, is that the Tree _was_ Deus.

Shadowtalk on p. 46 of RA:S, reads as follows:
> Some of the Uninitiated, as they call
themselves, remain among the otaku. The Banded
largely ignore them, though they call some of them
"babel" behind their backs. Not one has defected
to the Resistance, a telling sign of how effective
a hold Deus has over its children.
> Peregrine

> "Babel" is the name of one of Deus' first otaku,
Deus wished to sacrifice him, and Babel turned
against him. He is masterless now, and works
against Deus from outside the arcology."
> Ronin

"Ronin" is the name that Babel took for himself at the end of
Technobabel. In the published text, I don't think it's ever concretely
indicated that the shadowtalk poster named Ronin is the same
character; HOWEVER, in some of the suplimental material that Dave
Hyatt and FASA have put up on the web, it does specifically state that
it's the same "Ronin" from Technobabel.

- From http://www.shadowland.org/RenrakuArcology/CastOfShadows.html
"Ronin -- Michael Bishop, formerly the otaku known as Babel. Refused
to sacrifice his life for Deus, and now fights the AI any way he can."

So, by what's in RA:S, it's apparent that Babel himself thinks the
Tree was Deus, and that Deus' pet Banded Otaku think that Babel
betrayed Deus by refusing to sacrifice himself. It's still possible of
course, that the Tree was Psycotrope, but I'd bet a fiver on it being
Deus.

Uhm, erm, uh, Mike...there is a statement I recall reading in the RA:S book
concerning "Babel". Also, I think it's interesting that any of the Otaku they
got into a fight with (they being the Archangels of Deus) referred to them as
"Babel".

Most likely because Ronin's name used to _be_ Babel. :)

Okay somebody, help me out, any clues as to where I could find something
mentioning this, as for some reason or another I believed that the 'tree' was
Psychotrope.

This information about Deus ranting about Babel betraying him, and how
Deus' pet Banded Otaku refer to all non-banded Otaku as Babel can be
found in the Renraku Arcology: Shutdown Sourcebook-Adventure.

That is correct. I did not, however, err. I correct somebody because
Deus' Angels did not refer to all the Otaku present on Shadowland as
"Babel", only 2. And of all the references to Babel, only once was it
not directed at Ronin.

If my memory serves me, syzygy is an astronomical condition with the sun and
moon in some alignment with Earth. depending on how that conjunction works,
it makes sense as a street name, especially if it's something like a terran

Odd choice of street name.
