One major alteration I'm thinking of making on the standard timeline is to
move Bug City (and the Cabrini refuge) to Denver... you think the response was
weird in Chicago, a town controlled by one government?

Well, there's not too much anyone could have done about it. For a
while, I'm sure, no one knew whether Chicago was worth saving or not.
With Denver's multi-sorta-national status, things get even more
political -- you might find that one of the Treay members is willing to
pitch in a little more help, if they get control over the areas they
'salvage'. Denver's much more important to many more people, so I don't
think the Bugs would ever get to be as large a problem as Chi-town did.
Except, of course, that no one can ever get rid of them.

The Cabrini Refuge in Denver. Cool. I can see that, especially just
because it can accept members from different nations (o/~ "Outcasts all,
gather ye round me...)

Actually, to me, the UCAS response to Chicago sounded just the sort of
response a government given over to losing various portions of its land
to seceding states would make. "Oh, FUCK. Lost another city. Cordon
'em off and call out the guard!" *That* would have been an interesting
(if unrealistic) outcome, rather than the Big Red Reset Button.

/ I tend to stick as close to FASA's events and timeline as I can.
/ However I have found that being some time behind the books can
/ be a big help, because then you can find out what's going on
/ before you incorporate it into your game; my game wasusually

/ instead of in '96.

I don't stick to the timeline closely, but the events do happen. Every
now and then I have to move an event. For example, the events in Bug
City are taking place in Denver in my game (and it is playing havoc
with border security like you wouldn't believe <EGMG>).

I've found that FASA's timeline of events enhances my campaign in that
the players aren't sure if the current adventure is related to my
campaign or FASA's. FASA creates some beautiful red herrings for me to
use :)

I'm running it now, with some interesting appearances from Predator and
Prey <veg>
